Job Description and Duties

Working under the direction of the Caltrans Maintenance Manager II, works with District Avalanche, Blasting, Gazex, Climbing, and Scaling Team. This team is responsible for performing avalanche control, blasting, rock scaling, and related maintenance activities throughout the District. These activities include maintaining and utilizing the Gazex, Locat, and Avalauncher systems, use of hand placed and propelled explosives, climbing and rock scaling, and highway maintenance. This team is also responsible for all blasting accomplished throughout the District. There may be occasions when working this program will require acting as a laborer.

Eligibility for hire is determined by your score on the Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor Exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions

Position located at 20 Schneider Cow Camp Road, Kirkwood, Ca 95646.

The incumbent may/will be exposed to loud noise, dust, chemicals, extreme weather conditions, great heights, and disgruntled public. Employee will be required to work rotating or irregular shifts, including weekends, nights, holidays, and overtime. Drives to and responds to after-hour emergencies. The incumbent may be exposed to computers in various lighting conditions, stand or sit for prolonged periods. Must be able to work at a keyboard and focus on complex tasks for long periods of time. This position requires the incumbent at times to work at elevations up to 11,000 feet, in temperatures below zero and traverse steep rugged terrain in severe weather conditions.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

  • The incumbent must have and maintain a California Blaster license with the small‑scale construction, cap and fuse, avalanche control –hand placed and propelled, and non‑electric endorsements.
  • Must have and maintain Certificate of Eligibility from Department of Justice, Certified Caltrans Blaster with Rock and Stump, Avalanche, Locat endorsement.
  • Incumbent must have Gazex certification and experience and knowledge of computers, electrical components, supply system, Locat experience and knowledge of firing procedures and supply system.
  • Incumbent must have knowledge of Snow Science.
  • Incumbent must have mountain knowledge such as wind patterns, slide zones, etc. Incumbent will also be required to train personnel in all of the above listed categories.
