Essex County College in Newark, NJ is seeking a Maintenance Service Worker to perform preventive maintenance, upkeep and repairs of buildings, equipment, machinery and grounds under the supervision of the Director of Facilities Management.

Open Date 10/14/2026 and Close Date 12/30/2026, starting salary $35,000–$37,000 with a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, vacation, pension and tuition waivers.

Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities Management or designee, the Maintenance Service Worker will perform preventative maintenance, upkeep and repairs of buildings, equipment, machinery and grounds

Please Note: This position offers a competitive starting salary of $35,000 – $37,000 along with a comprehensive college benefits package.

Supervisory Role

Oral and written instructions are received from the Director of Facilities Management or designee. The Maintenance Service Worker may supervise support staff or student workers.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Assist with carpentry, painting, masonry, plumbing, graffiti removal and other repair and maintenance activities.

2. Assist with electrical maintenance and repairs.

3. Assemble, install and repair pipes, fittings, fixtures of heating, HVAC , water, sewer systems, and open clogged drains.

4. Assist with the alteration, repair and maintenance of buildings, floors, furniture, machinery and other equipment and structures.

5. Move and assemble furniture, machinery, equipment and miscellaneous materials.

6. Sweep, shovel and remove snow from steps, walks and walkways and all areas of buildings as required.

7. Assist in correcting safety hazards.

8. Assist with general building maintenance and upkeep.

9. Maintain strict confidentiality and security of records.

10. Prepare routine, special and ancillary reports as required.

11. Perform other related duties as required.

1. Maintain responsibilities in spite of inclement weather and other similar factors. Reports to work on occasions of school closing due to such events, unless otherwise notified.

2. Valid driver’s or commercial license.

Minimum Qualifications

2. Ability to read general operating instructions and to write simple reports.

3. Ability to routinely lift, push, or pull up to 70 pounds.

4. Ability to pass physical examination requirements as established by College Health Services.

5. Excellent interpersonal skills.

6. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

7. Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience (number of years), Knowledge and/or Abilities

1. Demonstrated experience in janitorial/custodial work in an institution or industry.

2. Demonstrated knowledge of plumbing, electrical construction, and air conditioning equipment.

3. Demonstrated knowledge of various types of equipment used in the building trade.
