THE POSITION

The Maintenance Repairman Intern position with the Department of Transportation gives students a paid opportunity to learn valuable hands-on trade skills. This role lets you work directly with experienced staff while building confidence in tools, equipment, and maintenance techniques. You will gain practical knowledge that supports future career choices in building and grounds maintenance. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position provides structured training in building and grounds maintenance while supporting daily repair tasks and safe work habits. It allows students to learn trade skills, proper equipment use, and workplace expectations while working alongside experienced staff. As a Maintenance Repairman Intern, you will perform the following duties:

  • Skill Development: Learn maintenance practices by working directly with experienced repair staff
  • Repair Assistance: Assist with or perform basic building and grounds repair and maintenance tasks
  • Equipment Use: Operate lawn, hand, and power tools once proper knowledge is demonstrated
  • Workplace Upkeep: Complete cleaning and upkeep of tools, equipment, and work areas
  • Safety Practices: Follow safety rules and practice safe behavior around tools and equipment
  • Schedule Adherence: Follow the assigned work schedule throughout the training program

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • High school internship for the 2026-2027 school year. Internship will run from September 2026 through June 2027
  • Work schedule will vary based on the agreement between the high school and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (COPA) location.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • You must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire.
  • You must be a junior or senior enrolled in high school during the 2026 - 2027 school year.

Additional Requirements:

  • Letter of Recommendation: You must attach a Letter of Recommendation from your school's co-op coordinator, career or guidance counselor, or similar designated school professional indicating you meet your school's requirements and are being recommended for this opportunity.
  • By participating in this program, the student and school agree to use the Commonwealth's Training Plan, Statement of Responsibilities, and Student Performance Evaluation. Forms will be provided to the student upon acceptance of this position.
  • Work Permit: Minors will be required to submit their Work Permit upon acceptance of this position.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
