Job summary

San Diego Youth Services seeks a Maintenance Repair Worker in the Facilities program to be based in San Diego. This is a full-time & non-exempt position reporting to the Chief Program Officer and Facilities Manager.

Based in San Diego, you will repair items at SDYS properties, help develop maintenance schedules, and coordinate with staff and vendors. Five years of repair experience, a valid license, and own tools are required, with a strong commitment to serving youth.

Qualifications

  • Five years of experience in general repairs and building maintenance including electrical, patchwork, carpentry, doors/windows, cement, painting, plumbing, drywall install, furnace maintenance, and lock repair.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance.
  • Must provide own transportation and tools.
  • Willingness to be fingerprinted and pass clearance processes.
  • General Contractor’s License is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain data collection and contract compliance records; report materials and supplies used monthly.
  • Repair items at SDYS properties as needed.
  • Assist Facilities Manager in developing and implementing a maintenance schedule.
  • Advise Admin and Center staff on preventative maintenance issues.
  • Attend Administrative Support Team meetings regularly.
  • Assist Real Estate Director and Facilities Manager with bids from outside vendors and supervise licensed contractors to ensure compliance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Maintenance Repair Worker

San Diego Youth Services seeks a Maintenance Repair Worker in the Facilities program to be based in San Diego. This is a full-time & non-exempt position reporting to the Chief Program Officer and Facilities Manager.

San Diego Youth Services: Who we are

San Diego Youth Services has helped improve the lives of more than 840,000 homeless, runaway and vulnerable youth since its beginning in 1970. We provide safe places to live and long-term solutions through shelter, foster homes, community centers and housing to more than 28,000 youth every year at 100+ community and school locations. Through prevention, early intervention and treatment, we also help youth before they need higher levels of care or become homeless.

We aim to:

  1. Meet the basic needs of youth. Hunger, poverty and youth homelessness are on the rise for many youth and their families today. We help meet these basic needs for youth. What could be more vital than food and shelter? We provide safe places to live and long-term solutions through shelter, foster homes, community centers and housing.
  2. Create positive connection. We help youth focus on positive life changes and healthy relationships as part of providing needed resources and services. San Diego Youth Services has long provided foster homes and adoption support services for families considering adopting a youth in the foster care system.
  3. Help youth develop life skills. In addition to a range of safe and stable housing options, we offer support to help youth develop the independent living skills necessary to become self-sufficient and keep off the streets.
  4. Promote overall health and well-being. Early intervention and care for the whole child are critical. We provide a broad continuum of services to help youth overcome trauma and challenges that put them at risk, including case management, counseling, mental health treatment and educational support and resources.

SDYS has a staff of approximately 250 employees and 80 volunteers working across San Diego County and an annual budget of approximately $24 million.

CONTEXT OF THE POSITION:

Accountable to the Chief Program Officer and Facilities Manager for repairs and maintenance of San Diego Youth Services (SDYS) properties as assigned. Repairs and maintenance to include electrical, patchwork, drywall install and prep. Carpentry, doors, windows, cement, painting, plumbing, furnace maintenance and lock installation or repair.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintain data collection and contract compliance of records as required. Maintain accurate records of all work completed, and monthly reporting of materials & supplies purchases.
  • Repair items as necessary at SDYS properties.
  • Assist the Facilities Manager in developing and implementing a maintenance schedule for SDYS properties.
  • Advise Admin and Center staff on preventative maintenance issues.
  • Attend Administrative Support Team meetings on a regular basis.
  • Participate in implementing the agency’s resource development plan as appropriate.
  • Assist Real Estate Director and Facilities Manager on the review, negotiation and awarding of bids from outside vendors for major work at all SDYS facilities and supervise the work of outside licensed contractors to ensure contract compliance and any HIPPA related requirements on construction sites.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Maintain confidentiality and privacy standards of service partner protected health information and other applicable information and material in accordance to agency and center policies, and applicable regulations and laws including HIPAA.

  • Effectively communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

  • Possess flexibility to accomplish job responsibilities in several work environments, whether it be from home, on the road, or in an office.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Five years’ experience in general repairs and building maintenance to include electrical, patchwork, carpentry, doors, windows, cement, painting, plumbing, drywall install, furnace maintenance, lock repair, etc.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and vehicle insurance.
  • Must provide own transportation and tools.
  • Must be willing to be fingerprinted and other clearance processes (hire is pending the results of appropriate clearances).
  • General Contractor’s License is preferred but not required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical fitness: Prolonged periods standing and walking.
  • Mobility: Must be able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces.
  • Strength: Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at a time.
  • Manual dexterity: Possess manual dexterity.
  • Mechanical and mathematical aptitude: Having good mechanical and mathematical aptitude is preferred.

Keeping facilities’ operations running smoothly without interruption and being supportive in urgent situations allows SDYS to complete mission.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Hourly Pay Range: $24-$26
