MAINTENANCE PERSON - METER MAINTENANCE *

Meter Maintenance Person

JOB SUMMARY

The incumbent, under the guidance of the Supervisor, Meter Maintenance, is responsible for manual labor and related equipment operation in the installation, repair and maintenance of water meter and services. Other responsibilities include reading meter routes, accurate reading and recording of water consumption of utility customers. Work includes keeping of such records according to established forms so that billing can be made properly. Job requires knowledge of Itron software to read, log and diagnose meters. Must read meter routes when necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times. All other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or department director.

  • Install, repair and maintain water meters.
  • Assist in locating and determining water leaks.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to follow all required safety procedures.
  • Install fire hydrant meters to protect the City water from contaminates.
  • Complete all Assigned work and Meter Service Orders (MSOs) daily.
  • Maintain service truck and assigned equipment.
  • Repair broken meter boxes and site restoration to customer's property.
  • Install, replace, diagnosis ERT using ITRON software.
  • Read water meters on assigned routes.
  • Record readings accurately into hand held computer.
  • Analyze and code meter issues with ITRON software in need of repair.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
  • Regular attendance and timeliness required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • All skills may be acquired on the job.
  • The incumbent must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be trained in trench box safety, confined space and work zone safety in (1) year.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • The incumbent should possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment in the department.
  • Knowledge of structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
  • Problem solving, speed, and accuracy are required to perform the duties of this position.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required.
POSITION DESIGNATIONS

This position is designated as essential during inclement weather events. City services will be maintained during inclement weather, such as heavy snow or ice storms and all essential employees are expected to report to work due to the critical functions of the position. This position is not able to work remotely.

This position does have the potential to drive as part of their regular job duties.

This position is designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is subject to random DOT drug and alcohol screenings and/or non-DOT drug and alcohol screenings (a safety/security sensitive position is one in which a momentary lapse in attention may result in injury or death of another person).

While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, works near moving mechanical parts and is at risk of electrical chock. The incumbent is also exposed to wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and fumes or airborne particles. The inclement work in high precarious places is at risk of vibration. The employee is also exposed to extreme heat or cold (non-weather).

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
