Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, West Palm Beach VA medical facility, is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic Work Leader (WL-4749-10) to lead a mechanical maintenance group responsible for plumbing, pipefitting, welding, and related systems essential to patient care and life safety.

The role involves assigning work, setting priorities, overseeing safety, coordinating with engineering staff and contractors, and ensuring timely completion of preventive maintenance and work orders.

Qualifications

• Experience or training showing ability to perform the duties.
• Applicants will be rated under the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead and assign work to the mechanical trades team (Plumbers, General Equipment Repair Mechanics, Pipefitters, Welders).
• Set priorities, deadlines, methods, and safety practices; ensure understanding of requirements.
• Perform journey-level maintenance, repair, installation, and alteration of plumbing, pipefitting, welding, and related systems.
• Diagnose malfunctions and ensure repairs meet timeframes and standards.
• Assist in planning daily/weekly/monthly shop activities and coordinate with other trades and contractors.
• Provide input on scheduling, labour distribution, materials and equipment needs.
• Maintain records of work orders, preventive maintenance, and logs using automated systems.
• Enforce safety, infection control, and VA policies; ensure housekeeping standards.
