Job summary

Sonoco is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic I in Charlotte, NC. The role focuses on troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining plant equipment, with changeovers and preventive maintenance to ensure smooth production. Experience in cutting, welding, and grinding is preferred; PLC knowledge is a plus.

The position requires safety-conscious teamwork, ability to lift, and compliance with maintenance protocols. Shift is 1st, 6:00 am–4:00 pm with potential overtime.

Qualifications

• 2–4 years of maintenance experience, or equivalent technical training.
• Accreditation from a technical school or skilled trades program.
• Proficient with cutting, welding, and grinding processes.

Responsibilities

Location- Charlotte, NC Job Title - Maintenance Mechanic I Rate-$25.32 -$30.93 (based on experience) Shift: 1st - 6:00 am - 4:00 pm *Overtime may be required.

What you will be doing:

• Troubleshoots, repairs, and adjusts equipment as needed.
• Performs equipment changeovers according to production demands.
• Provides preventative maintenance to plant equipment.
• Rebuilds presses and support equipment.
• Evaluates/maintains hand tools for condition and compliance.
• Familiar with Mechanical Prints, knowledge of motors and controls, troubleshooting skills.
• PLC programming is a plus.
• Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment safely.
• Continuous improvement of skills as outlined by the maintenance training matrix.
• Effective communication skills including the ability to receive and follow direction and provide feedback as requested, as well as with other maintenance employees.
• Works cooperatively with teammates as a natural work team.
• Work schedule is 40-48 hours/week plus overtime requirements.
• Accurate documentation of maintenance records using CMMS System.
• Ensures new machines are prepared for operation following protocols and procedures and perform regular technical testing to ensure their safety and efficiency.
• Collect data on machine operation and suggests actions to reduce machine downtime.
• Carry out additional duties as requested by supervisor.

• Can handle moderately complex issues and problems and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff.
• Possess solid working knowledge of subject matter.
• Received accreditation from a technical school or an applicable skilled trades program and 2 to 4 years of experience.
• Proficient and experienced in Cutting, Welding, Grinding
• Ability to lift 10-50 lbs., often carrying up to 20 lbs.
• Can follow directions and work as part of a team.
• Have physical stamina and dexterity.
• Job requires bending, twisting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and reaching frequently.
• Have a working knowledge of using hand tools, power tools and precision measuring and testing instruments to repair and maintain, in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, and manufacturer's specifications, machinery and mechanical equipment, such as engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines and equipment.
