Job summary

Job description

Employee will maintain mechanical systems and equipment and perform skilled trades in at least two mechanical trades including: metal fabrication, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, locksmith or welding. Employee will exercise considerable independent judgment in making decisions without the availability of supervision. This position will perform work assignments at the St. Louis Correctional Facility.

Experience Requirements
  • Maintenance Mechanic 8 – Two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades.
  • Maintenance Mechanic E9 – Four years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades, including two years equivalent to a Maintenance Mechanic 8.
  • Maintenance Mechanic 10 – Five years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades, including one year equivalent to a Maintenance Mechanic E9. Completion of a recognized program in vocational training for the mechanical or electrical trades may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers.

Eligibility & Policies

The Department of Corrections may screen out job applicants who have been convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.

Training

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.

Drug & Alcohol

This is a drug and alcohol test-designated position.
