Job Description

Position Purpose:

The WWTF Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and improving mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and facility systems at the wastewater treatment facility. This position helps ensure reliable plant operations, regulatory compliance, equipment availability, and a safe working environment.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair wastewater treatment equipment and facility systems.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on:
    • Pumps, motors, blowers, compressors, and gearboxes
    • Valves, piping, gates, screens, and conveyors
    • Clarifiers, aeration equipment, mixers, and disinfection systems
    • Sludge-processing equipment, including presses, centrifuges, and conveyors
    • Chemical-feed systems and storage equipment
    • HVAC, plumbing, lighting, and building systems
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and instrumentation problems.
  • Use electrical meters, hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and maintenance software.
  • Perform basic electrical repairs, motor troubleshooting, wiring, control-panel work, and component replacement, as authorized.
  • Inspect and maintain pumps, motors, belts, bearings, seals, couplings, and other rotating equipment.
  • Assist with installation, alignment, calibration, and commissioning of new equipment.
  • Read and interpret equipment manuals, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings.
  • Respond to equipment failures, alarms, spills, and other operational emergencies.
  • Complete work orders, inspection reports, maintenance logs, parts requests, and regulatory records accurately.
  • Maintain an inventory of tools, spare parts, lubricants, and maintenance supplies.
  • Coordinate with plant operators to schedule maintenance while minimizing disruption to treatment processes.
  • Assist contractors and inspectors working at the facility.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, cutting, grinding, and rigging tasks when qualified and authorized.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas, tools, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Follow lockout/tagout, confined-space entry, hot-work, fall-protection, chemical-handling, and other safety procedures.
  • Participate in emergency response, standby, on-call, weekend, and holiday coverage as assigned.
  • Support facility improvement projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Work is performed throughout the wastewater treatment facility, including pump stations, treatment basins, mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, laboratories, buildings, and outdoor areas.
  • The position may involve exposure to wastewater, biological hazards, chemicals, high noise levels, moving machinery, slippery surfaces, confined spaces, and extreme temperatures.
  • Employees must follow all safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment.
Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • Two or more years of experience in industrial maintenance, municipal utilities, wastewater treatment, manufacturing, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience maintaining wastewater or water treatment equipment.
  • Industrial electrical, instrumentation, PLC, SCADA, or controls experience.
  • Welding, machining, fabrication, or pipefitting experience.
  • Experience with pumps, blowers, centrifuges, belt presses, chemical systems, and automated process controls.
  • Experience using a CMMS or electronic work-order system.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of mechanical systems, pumps, motors, electrical components, piping, valves, and industrial equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals, schematics, blueprints, and written procedures.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, testing instruments, and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required safety training and certifications.
  • Strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to identify the source of equipment problems and determine appropriate corrective action.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple maintenance tasks.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accurate recordkeeping.
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively to emergency situations.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and environmental compliance.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Wastewater operator certification or related state license.
  • OSHA, confined-space, forklift, aerial-lift, or first-aid/CPR certifications.

Physical Requirements:

  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb ladders and stairs, and work in confined or awkward positions.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds and use mechanical lifting devices for heavier materials.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, vehicles, forklifts, and other equipment.
  • Work at heights and in confined spaces when properly trained and authorized.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection where applicable.
  • Distinguish colors and read gauges, meters, labels, drawings, and computer screens.
