QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
- Positive prior work history at ANSBI (if applicable) or positive performance history at prior employment positions for other employers. Positive performance history, wherever worked, verifiable through references.
- Must have entry level knowledge of:
- Basic construction, including concrete, masonry, roofing, flooring, structural and finish carpentry and related areas.
- Safe, effective operation of common hand, power, and shop tools.
- Procedures and requirements for use and handling of hazardous substances.
- Fire and safety codes.
- Must have sufficient English comprehension, oral and reading skills to be able to follow detailed instructions given in English, maintain adequate communication between other Alamo Navajo School Board, Inc. staff and supervisor, and read and follow labels and instructions on cleaning, shop tools and power lawn tools and disinfectant product used on the job.
- Must be physically fit and able to lift or move up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
- Must satisfactorily complete a written and performance test regarding inspection, cleaning and safety products, and using manuals and report forms to be used on the job.
- One or more year’s satisfactory employment experience as a facility maintenance worker within the past five years.
- Must be insurable under ANSB’s vehicle insurance policy.
INDIAN PREFERENCE: Preferential consideration for employment will be given to persons of documented Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Native Tribal membership who meet the qualifications above, in accordance with the requirements of P.L. 93-638 and the Navajo Nation Tribal Code.
ADDITIONAL PREFERENCE:
- Basic training courses such as: Hazardous Materials handling; Home Improvement (HITP); Residential HVAC operation, maintenance and repair; Residential plumbing and fixture, maintenance and repair; Fire Prevention and Suppression.
- Working knowledge or experience with use of work orders, time sheets, and similar routine facility management documents, forms and reports.
- Possession of one or more of the following: Building Trade Licenses, or equivalent; Journeyman Carpenter; Journeyman Plumber with or without LP Gas qualifications; Journeyman Electrician
- Working knowledge or experience with use of work tickets, timesheets, and similar routine facility management paperwork.
Credentials, Licenses and/or Certificates:
- Must have and maintain a New Mexico Driver’s License.
- Must have a driving record such that he/she is insurable without additional penalty premium under ANSB Inc.’s automotive liability insurance program.

PAY RANGE: Grade F for less than two years of experience, ANSB General Salary Scale Grade G for more than two years of qualifying experience and Technical certification or a building trade license in areas such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supports and efficiently carries out responsibilities in accordance with Alamo Navajo School Board, Inc., Policies and Procedures.
- Represents Alamo Navajo School Board, Inc. in a manner-reflecting professionalism and, which enhances community understanding of the program.
- Maintains a high personal standard of professional and ethical conduct. Accepts professional responsibility for keeping informed on current educational topics and advancements.
- Assigned, or on a regular schedule, performs grounds maintenance and improvement duties of a general nature, including but not necessarily limited to the following typical actions:
- Irrigates and fertilizes lawns, trees, shrubs, etc.
- Mows and trims lawns using power equipment.
- Prunes trees and shrubs.
- Controls weed growth by cutting or spraying herbicides.
- Picks up trash and litter from ANSB grounds.
- Sweeps and cleans parking lots and streets.
- Picks up all institutional and quarters trash from dumpsters on ANSB campus, transports it to landfill area and, dumps it.
- Clears snow and ice from sidewalks, entryways, porches, etc.
- Cleans and maintains drainage ditches and waterways.
- Periodically checks perimeter fencing on ANSB campus, restores gates and repairs any breaks, sags, or other damage. Initiates cleaning of cattle guards where required.
- Removes stray livestock from ANSB campus whenever found or reported to be present. Notifies owner, if information is known.
- Completes all reports, records, checklist, operational logs and other paperwork required to document and manage the work done, as assigned and in a timely manner.
- Performs building maintenance duties of a general nature, requiring less than a Journeyman’s qualifications including but not limited to:
- Replaces lights, bulbs, and florescent tubes.
- Cleans clogged plumbing drain lines.
- Reads and records gas and water meters
- Makes minor repairs to floors, floor coverings, walls and ceilings.
- Paints or retouches soiled or damaged surfaces using brushes and/or rollers to apply latex and alkyd paints.
- Cleans floors, windows, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, walls, and woodwork in vacant housing units.
- Performs and records daily checks on the operation of heating and other equipment.
- As assigned by work ticket, performs more complex repair and maintenance duties, including but not limited to:
- Repair, replacement, or construction of concrete walkways, ramps, and stairs.
- Replacement of minor electrical components of facilities such as switches, outlets, fixtures and frayed electrical wires.
- Moderate carpentry such as hanging doors, installing locksets, repairing doors, jams, windows, cabinets, etc.
- Scheduled maintenance of residential-type evaporative coolers such as cleaning, lubrication of bearings, and replacement of pads.
- Scheduled maintenance of residential-type gas furnaces, such as cleaning, lubricating bearings, and lighting pilot lights.
- Scheduled maintenance of hot water heaters, repair or replacement of faucets, replacement of cartridges, servicing garbage disposals and dishwashers.
- Adheres to the Alamo Navajo School Board, Inc. Policy Personnel Manual and Administrative procedures for implementing it, as they may be amended from time to time.
- Provides for own professional growth through ongoing program of reading, and as scheduled by the supervisor, accepts and actively participates in training related to the job. Makes use of knowledge and skills learned on the job.
- Must take an annual physical examination and secure certification by a licensed Physician.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
- This position is subject by law to finger printing and a criminal/character background investigation.
- Must provide documentation of immunity or immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, and
Measles/rubella, and of tuberculosis status by skin test or X-ray, within thirty (30) days of
hiring, and at such additional intervals as may be determined by the immediate supervisor or
the ANSB Executive Director.
EVALUATION: Will be evaluated in accordance with the Alamo Navajo School Board, Inc., policies and procedures.
