Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is seeking a Maintenance/Custodial worker to provide janitorial and maintenance services across several tribal facilities, including the ECC, Child Care Center, Health Clinic and maintenance buildings.

The role is full‑time and non‑exempt, with potential for a split shift during the ECC school year or in inclement weather. Duties cover cleaning, repairs, groundskeeping, and safety compliance.

  • Previous janitorial, custodial or maintenance experience preferred.
  • Ability to use maintenance equipment such as floor buffer, carpet shampooer and drill.
  • Must pass background and fingerprint check prior to hire and annually thereafter.
  • Must obtain physical exam and required vaccines (or exemption).
  • Must be able to do manual labor and lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license and liability insurance required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide maintenance and custodial services for tribal buildings including classrooms, offices and common areas.
  • Maintain grounds, sidewalks, parking lots and exterior/interior building areas.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs (caulking, minor electrical, plumbing, painting, appliance repair).
  • Assist with electrical, heating and plumbing repairs and HVAC troubleshooting as needed.
  • Clean and disinfect bathrooms, sinks and fixtures; manage waste and recycling.
  • Ensure safe storage and handling of chemicals and maintain cleanliness logs.
  • Conduct year‑round grounds maintenance including snow removal and lawn care.
  • Attend staff meetings and adapt duties as organizational needs change.

$17.00 - $20.00 per hour, 40 hours per week, DOQ

THIS IS A REGULAR FULL-TIME NON-EXEMPT POSITION
JOB SUMMARY

To provide maintenance/janitorial services to the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa’s tribal buildings. These duties include custodial services, grounds maintenance, and preventative and corrective maintenance functions to be performed as needed. This is a full-time job and could be a split shift position during regular ECC school year, inclement weather or temporary fill in.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (SOME DUTIES ARE LOCATION SPECIFIC)
  1. Work as part of a team and take direction.
  2. Assist in maintaining all aspects of tribal properties, including, but not limited to: grounds, sidewalks, parking lots, common areas, exterior and interior of buildings, and all department mechanical and electrical equipment.
  3. Responsible to perform routine maintenance and repairs as assigned. Routine maintenance and repairs include but are not limited to: caulking, minor electrical, unclogging sinks and toilets, faucet repair and replacement, wall prep/patching, painting, and appliance repair.
  4. Assist with electrical, heating and plumbing repairs, such as but not limited to, replacing light fixtures, receptacles, trouble shoot HVAC repairs and replace sink traps and drains.
  5. Bathrooms – Clean and disinfect toilets (bowls and all), clean and disinfect sinks, clean mirrors, sweep and mop floors, check and fill all dispensers (soap, paper towel, and toilet paper), empty garbage and assist with recycling.
  6. Kitchen - Sweep floor, mop floor, empty garbage.
  7. Classrooms, Office, and Hallways – Vacuum carpet and rug areas, sweep floors, mop floors, empty garbage, clean and disinfect sinks.
  8. Outdoors – Snow/ice removal prior to staff and children arrival and as needed. This includes shoveling off roofs when needed. Mow grass, weeding (either manual or with weed eater) and general upkeep outdoors.
  9. Other – Lock janitors closets when not in use, proper storage of chemicals, general maintenance of AC & furnace units, strip and wax all floors as needed, maintain building safety checklist, shampoo all carpets and rugs as needed. disinfect all doorknobs, spot check all windows daily, and perform year-round grounds and facilities maintenance.
  10. Keep all maintenance logs up to date.
  11. Maintain an organized, clean and safe work environment. This includes only using approved chemicals and keeping them locked away when not in use.
  12. Pick up packages and other large items as needed.
  13. Provide a deep clean of facilities when staff, community members, and children are not present or more often as requested.
  14. Ability to complete minor tasks including but not limited to hanging cabinets / shelves, minor repairs to plumbing or other fixtures, putting together desks or other furniture and assisting staff with office and classroom needs in relation to maintenance.
  15. Assist in ordering cleaning and other supplies through the Public Works department.
  16. Perform grounds keeping duties, e.g., lawn mowing, weeding, snow removal, and remove snow from roofs as necessary. Snow removal in parking lots and sidewalks must be done prior to staff and children arriving each day.
  17. Must attend appropriate staff meetings.
  18. The above duties and responsibilities are not an all-inclusive list but rather a general representation of the duties and responsibilities associated with this position. The duties and responsibilities will be subject to change based on organizational needs and/or deemed necessary by the supervisor.
SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY

None

KNOWLEDGE

General knowledge of cleaning and maintenance of facilities preferred. Knowledge of safety practices with use of cleaning supplies and lawn and snow removal equipment preferred. Knowledge of lawn and snow removal equipment for maintenance purposes preferred. Knowledge of year-round building and ground maintenance preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Must be 18 years of age old or older. High School diploma or GED preferred.
  2. Previous work experience as janitor, custodian, or maintenance, preferred.
  3. Must demonstrate ability to use maintenance equipment such as floor buffer, carpet shampooer, drill, etc.
  4. Must pass a background and fingerprint check prior to hire and every year thereafter. Failure is not considered automatic disqualification.
  5. Must obtain physical exam and obtain required vaccines (or obtain exemption).
  6. Must be able to do manual labor and lift objects of at least 50 pounds.
  7. Good communication skills.
  8. Valid driver’s license and at least liability insurance required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to do physical manual labor that would require bending twisting, reaching and lifting. Ability to lift and carry at least 50 lbs. Must be physically able to perform janitorial and year-round grounds and building maintenance duties. Must be able to climb ladders, shovel snow, remove snow and ice from roofs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Indoor – May include Early Childhood Center, Child Care Center, Red Cliff Health Clinic or other tribal buildings. Outdoor - grounds maintenance year-round, including winter snow removal / ice control. All t ribal buildings are smoke free.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

The ability to travel and attend meetings and trainings locally.
