Job summary

Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Fleet and Family Readiness (FFR) is seeking a skilled maintenance supervisor for the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department at Naval Station Great Lakes, IL. You will manage a crew across trades, estimate costs, procure materials, and ensure completion of renovations and new construction.

The role requires supervisory experience, ability to read blueprints, and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Certificate or license in at least one major trade preferred; may be substituted by 2 years general trades experience with training.
  • Minimum 2 years supervisor experience.
  • Prior Navy, MWR or military experience preferred.
  • Experience managing renovation/repair projects and resources.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings accurately.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adjust work operations for urgent or changing situations.

Job description

Summary

This position is located in the Facilities/Maintenance Branch, Support Division, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department, Naval Station Great Lakes, IL

Duties

Responsible for carrying out maintenance, repair and renovation projects and new construction as assigned within the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department. Includes minor to major repairs, renovations and special projects for 25 buildings at eight sites. Responsible for implementation of repairs and renovations from planning stages throughout finished work.

Manages an assigned workforce crew to meet specific jobs needs. Crew is assigned on a rotating basis, and may consist of maintenance mechanics for electrical, heating and air conditioning; Maintenance Workers for plumbing carpentry, etc. and Maintenance Helpers as general laborers. Manages all facets of either particular sections of a job or full jobs from planning to full implementation.

Provides rough estimates of project costs, personnel, equipment and materials needed to complete assigned tasks. Provides cost and time estimates. Determines correct materials to be used and submits recommendations. Conveys and explains ideas, concepts, and drawings from the Facility Maintenance Manager to the maintenance staff. Responsible for the department equipment, vehicles and tools. Also, responsible for specifying and procurement of building materials and supplies. Prepares purchase requests and ensures appropriate procurement procedures are followed. Ensures delivery of goods to site, quality of goods, and ensures proper inspection and acceptance. Assures that procedures are adhered to and that all appropriate codes are followed.

Responsible for internal review to ascertain compliance with standards, operator procedures and objectives relative to money, merchandise and other assets for each assigned project or phase.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Must possess and maintain a current driver's license.
  • Work is subject to an irregular tour to meet time constraints and deadlines to include night and weekend work.
  • Starting May 7, 2025, non-affiliated individuals requesting access will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another acceptable form of identification to access CNRMA Installations. (Review required documents section for more information.)
Qualifications

Resumes must include information which demonstrates experience and knowledge, skills, and ability (KSAs) as they relate to this position. Applicants are encouraged to be clear and specific when describing their experience level and KSAs.

A qualified candidate must possess: A certificate or license in at least one of the major trades (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.) is strongly preferred, but may be substituted by a minimum of 2 years of general trades experience with a minimum of one year of documented specialized training and/or experience in a combination of trades listed above. A minimum of two years supervisor experience is required. Prior Navy, MWR or military experience preferred. Must possess documented experience in efficient management of personnel and resources for renovation/repair projects, preferably including MWR or other military non-appropriated fund operations, the ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings accurately, and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must be able to appraise various program elements, evaluate and effect/recommend improvement to best achieve goals. Must display the ability to adjust work operations to meet urgent or changing situations.
