Job summary

Spacesaver Corporation in Fort Atkinson, WI is seeking a Maintenance Controls Technician to ensure reliability and continuous improvement of automated, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and robotic systems across the facility. You will diagnose equipment issues, optimize PLC/HMI programs, and support both daily maintenance and long‑term equipment improvements.

The role requires hands-on troubleshooting, collaboration with engineers and vendors, and adherence to safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Technical or associate degree in a maintenance or engineering field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with automation typical of sheet metal fabrication and painting operations preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and systematic problem-solving ability.
  • Proficiency with PLC programming, industrial electrical systems, VFDs, servo systems, and instrumentation.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and machine specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Follow safety policies and procedures, including lockout/tagout and Arc Flash requirements.
  • Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, and controls-related equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize PLC-controlled equipment, robotics, drives, and sensors.
  • Develop, modify, and maintain PLC, HMI, and SCADA programs (Allen‑Bradley, Siemens).
  • Maintain documentation including electrical schematics and program backups.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities and support OEM vendors when needed.

Maintenance Controls Technician

Maintenance Controls Technician is responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, and continuous improvement of automated, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and robotic systems across the facility. This role blends advanced controls engineering with hands‑on troubleshooting, supporting both daily maintenance needs and long‑term equipment improvements. The technician will diagnose complex equipment issues, optimize PLC/HMI programs, support special projects, and contribute to the safe and efficient operation of all manufacturing processes, facilities, and infrastructure.

  • Follow all Spacesaver safety policies and procedures, including start-up/shut-down, ergonomic practices, E-stops, lockout/tagout procedures, and Arc Flash.
  • Always behave safely.
  • Read, understand, and follow electronic and written shop orders.
  • Ensure compliance with NFPA, NEC, and company engineering standards.
  • Interpret drawings, schematics, and machine specifications to support troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Operate and maintain machine shop and fabrication equipment including lathes, mills, welders, pipe threaders, conduit benders, hydraulic presses, and cutting tools.
  • Perform Preventative Maintenance (PM) and Total Predictive Maintenance (TPM) activities to ensure equipment reliability, reduce unplanned downtime, and support long‑term asset health.
  • Perform maintenance activities on equipment, buildings, and grounds safely and proficiently
  • Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and controls‑related equipment breakdowns
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and optimize PLC‑controlled equipment, robotics, drives, sensors, and industrial automation systems.
  • Develop, modify, and maintain PLC, HMI, and SCADA programs (Allen‑Bradley, Siemens, etc.).
  • Maintain accurate documentation including electrical schematics, network layouts, and program backups
  • Suggest and implement improvements to equipment controls to enhance safety, quality, delivery, and productivity
  • Complete all required record documentation.
  • All other duties assigned.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities.
  • Adhere to scheduled work hours and be available to work overtime as needed.
  • Communicate effectively and positively with all team members.
  • Provide technical support to engineers, project managers, and maintenance technicians
  • Work with OEM vendors and external resources to resolve complex issues quickly.
  • Attend training to stay current on new and existing equipment technologies.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Technical or associate degree in a maintenance or engineering field, or 5-7 years of experience maintaining industrial equipment (robotics, controls, mechanicals, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical)
  • Experience with automation typical of sheet metal fabrication and painting operations preferred.
  • Complete all assigned developmental training plans, classes, and certifications
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and systematic problem‑solving ability.
  • Proficiency with PLC programming, industrial electrical systems, VFDs, servo systems, and instrumentation.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and machine specifications.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, NEC, Arc Flash, and LOTO requirements.
  • Solid PC skills including Microsoft Office.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a motor vehicle record check.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certifications for forklifts, overhead cranes, platform lifts, boom lifts, and other service equipment.
  • Flexibility to support both daily maintenance needs and project work.
