Job summary

Veolia North America is seeking a Maintenance Technician to supervise and perform maintenance at our treatment facilities. You will plan, schedule, and direct maintenance on a range of mechanical equipment, pumps, and related systems, while ensuring safety, quality, and efficiency.

You will train and coach a team, troubleshoot issues, and generate work orders and reports. A strong mechanical background and ability to work on-site are essential for success.

Qualifications

Job description

Position Purpose:

Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, plans, directs, and performs all maintenance and repair activities at the Treatment Plant, Pumping Stations, and CSO Facilities. Performs related work as required.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Plans, schedules, and directs maintenance activities on a variety of mechanical equipment, buildings, structures, and grounds.
  • Monitors work assignments and ensures that team members are meeting or exceeding production and quality standards. Coaches and trains team members to increase skill level and to improve productivity, safety, quality, and processes in a cost-effective manner.
  • Trains team members to troubleshoot and resolve problems.
  • Performs mechanical and minor electrical work, maintains, services, cleans, paints, lubricates, adjusts, and repairs equipment associated with the Treatment Plant, Pumping Stations, CSO Facilities and other structures.
  • Decides remedial repair or maintenance action in emergency situations.
  • Inspects Treatment Plant, Pumping Stations, and CSO Facilities to ensure that proper maintenance procedures are followed.
  • Prepares work orders either manually or from a Computer Maintenance Management System as required and prepares work related reports, procurement requisitions in an accurate and timely manner.
  • May fabricate devices and assemblies from steel. May weld, thread pipe and solder.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance, lubrication and minor adjustments on machines and related equipment which may include pumps, engines, centrifuges, generators, valves, gates, mixers, conveyors, blowers, chemical feed and odor control, disinfection equipment, filter press, and rotary drum thickeners.
  • May assist with maintaining parts, spares, and maintenance inventory.
  • May assist in other areas of the plant as directed.
  • May assist with orienting or training new or less experienced maintenance personnel.
Work Environment:
  • Spends 100% of the time in the operations environment.
  • Typically spends 25–35% of time exposed to outdoor and sometimes inclement weather.
  • Company service vehicles are used as required.
  • Travels 1–2 times per year for company provided training.
  • May serve rotational 24-hour emergency on-call.
  • Possible Work Hazards:May be exposed to possible operations hazards including fumes, dust, toxic and caustic chemicals, noise, rotating machinery, high pressure and hot and cold temperatures, slippery surfaces, water and electrical hazards.
Education/Experience/Background:
  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • Steel fabrication and welding experience may be required, if necessary, at site.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. Some vocational training and mechanical aptitude required, with the ability to perform basic computer entries.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in the care and use of all site specific, facility required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), including respirators, gas detectors, confined space equipment, etc.
  • Must consistently demonstrate the ability to perform all assigned tasks in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Must demonstrate ability to efficiently maintain, install and repair a variety of equipment which may include pumps, engines, generators, valves, gates, mixers, conveyors, blowers, chemical feed, odor control, disinfection equipment, filter press, and rotary drum thickeners.
  • Must demonstrate ability to use tools such as drill press, band saw, bench grinder, and torch wrench.
  • Must have ability to enter data in Computer Maintenance System (software).
  • Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily available.
Required Certification/Licenses/Training:
  • Must obtain a Grade II Operators Certificate issued by the State of Rhode Island's Board of Certification of Operators of Wastewater Treatment Facilities within six (6) months of appointment to the position.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
  • Employee Orientation, Departmental Operating Procedures, Safety, and OSHA Training as required.
  • Training in emergency retrieval, confined space entry procedures.
  • Forklift Certification if required by site.
  • May perform more advanced functions as part of training and development.
Physical Requirements:
  • Amount of time spent — Standing 25%, Walking 75% for as many as five miles per shift.
  • Requires close visual and hearing observation to detect non-conformance and machine malfunction.
  • Constantly uses hands to finger, handle or feel and frequently reaches with hands and arms.
  • Works in various positions; works on ladders, catwalks, and supports at heights of 50 feet above the ground; and works with hands extended above and below head and body up to 40 minutes using hand tools weighing up to 15 pounds.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds (occasionally 60 pounds) distances of 10 feet.
  • Occasional stooping, bending or kneeling and entering confined spaces.
