Job description

The Facilities department at the University at Buffalo invites applicants for our Maintenance Assistant Electrical position. The incumbent must possess basic knowledge of electrical equipment and systems and must demonstrate proficiency in the safe use of hand and power tools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Properly use material, tools and equipment associated with the electrical trade, including standard hand tools, portable power tools, measuring and testing instruments and shop equipment
  • Installation of conduit, panels and wire to NEC specifications
  • Routine maintenance on light fixtures, outlets and switches
  • Project work with Trades Specialist Electricians, Maintenance Helpers, Laborers and other unskilled workers
  • Assist with the installation, repair and construction tasks in the electrical trades
  • Assist journeyman level trades to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair electrical systems
  • Function as a lead worker over Maintenance Helpers or Laborers
  • Perform routine tasks of the electrical trade
Desired Physical Demands
  • Work safely and proficiently around electrical equipment, gas‑fired equipment, pressure vessels, and other systems, including in hazardous conditions.
  • Position self for tasks requiring bending, twisting, or accessing equipment located on mezzanines, catwalks, basements, and crawlspaces.
  • Ascend or descend ladders and work on ladders or scaffolding when servicing equipment.
  • Move, transport, and position items or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Move about in various industrial environments, including confined spaces and areas requiring air monitoring.
  • Work around loud, noisy, dusty, or dirty environments.
  • Remain stationary and move/traverse facility as tasks require.
  • Reach, push, and pull materials and equipment.
  • Communicate and exchange information with coworkers, supervisors, and others to ensure safe and accurate completion of work.
  • Detect, observe, and inspect equipment and surroundings to identify potential hazards or maintenance needs.
  • Perform the physical demands of the position outlined in the Position Summary.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of full‑time experience in maintenance electrical or electrical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson
  • Completion of an appropriate two‑year technical school course, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association‑Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program, or equivalent technical training
  • When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle type.

  • Strong team mentality
  • Willing to earn technical certifications, relevant training, or other documentation that illustrates depth in this trade
  • Understand and execute safe work practices and procedures
  • Demonstrate applicable institutional knowledge and practices of the campus and its operations
Compensation & Work Details

Salary Range: $42,641

Work Days: Monday – Friday

Work Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
