Position Overview
Chelsea School District is seeking a skilled, dependable, and service-oriented Maintenance Technician to join the Operations Department. This position performs a wide variety of building, equipment, grounds, mechanical, and preventative maintenance work throughout the District.
The successful candidate will be a motivated self-starter who takes pride in their work, communicates effectively, collaborates with others, and understands the importance of providing safe, functional, and welcoming environments for students and staff.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Minimum two years of maintenance, building trades, construction, facilities, or related experience.
- Valid Michigan driver's license.
- Experience safely operating vehicles, large equipment, machinery, and maintenance tools.
- Strong hands-on maintenance and troubleshooting abilities; skilled-trades experience preferred.
- Ability and willingness to develop proficiency in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical systems, grounds, and general building maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, safety information, mechanical/electrical drawings, and architectural blueprints.
- Basic computer skills, including email, electronic work orders, online research, and the ability to learn Building Automation Systems (BAS).
- Physical ability to climb, bend, work from ladders, perform physically demanding work, and lift at least 50 pounds.
- Demonstrated dependability, reliability, punctuality, and ability to work productively with or without direct supervision.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, overtime, emergencies, weather events, and adjusted schedules as District needs require.
Communication & Collaboration
This position works directly with teachers, administrators, custodians, students, coaches, contractors, and other District employees. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
The successful candidate must:
- Communicate professionally, respectfully, and effectively with faculty, staff, supervisors, and coworkers.
- Provide appropriate updates regarding the status, timing, impact, and completion of maintenance work.
- Listen to staff concerns and work collaboratively to identify effective solutions.
- Coordinate work in occupied schools while minimizing disruption to teaching and learning.
- Work effectively as part of the Operations team and collaboratively with other District departments.
- Communicate concerns, delays, safety issues, and operational problems through the appropriate chain of command.
- Maintain a positive, professional, and service-oriented approach, including during urgent or challenging situations.
Essential Responsibilities
- Perform general building, equipment, and grounds maintenance and preventative maintenance.
- Install, repair, troubleshoot, and maintain doors, hardware, cabinetry, walls, plumbing fixtures, piping, electrical components, and other building systems.
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain HVAC, mechanical, air-handling, pumping, and related equipment.
- Utilize and develop proficiency with District Building Automation Systems (BAS).
- Perform painting, minor flooring, glazing, roofing, metal work, and general construction repairs.
- Assist with installation and maintenance of kitchen, technology, classroom, and other District equipment.
- Support athletic field preparation, layout, lining, and facility needs.
- Assist with grounds maintenance, mowing, irrigation, landscaping, and snow and ice removal as required.
- Complete required preventative maintenance and safety inspections of HVAC, boilers, emergency lighting, fire alarm, mechanical, and related systems.
- Maintain accurate electronic work orders and communicate work status and completion.
- Safely operate District-owned vehicles, equipment, machinery, and tools.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to expand technical skills and knowledge.
- Respond to after-hours, emergency, weather-related, project, and special-event needs as assigned.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Operations, Operations Supervisor, or designee.
