Job summary

The New York Botanical Garden is seeking a Maintenance Technician to perform routine maintenance and repair across all Garden properties, including the perimeter fence. The role covers painting, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, shop work, and automotive repairs at a busy horticultural facility.

Responsibilities include handling work orders, managing projects from start to finish, keeping shops tidy, and training and supervising Assistant Maintainers.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of general maintenance experience.
• Proficiency in plumbing, masonry, carpentry and electrical work is desirable.
• Driver's license required; OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 preferred or obtainable within six months of hire.

• Execute projects from inception to completion for new structures or items.
• Maintain maintenance shops and storage rooms and comply with safety regulations.
• Oversee Assistant Maintainers and ensure safe, satisfactory completion of projects.

• Inspect tools, equipment, and vehicles and manage supply inventory.
• Demonstrate proficiency with ladders, lifts and other platforms.
• Assist with office moves and furniture delivery.

Position Summary

Perform routine maintenance and repair of buildings and related work across all Garden properties, including the perimeter fence. The primary responsibilities of a maintainer include Painting, Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry, Masonry, shop work, and automotive repairs.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

• Fulfill assigned work orders. Ability to take direction from management and effectively communicate with managers, team members, and garden staff.
• Execute new projects from inception to completion related to the construction or fabrication of new structures or items.
• Maintain all maintenance shops and storage rooms in an orderly fashion and comply with Garden safety regulations.
• Monitor the work of Assistant Maintainers and ensure all assigned projects are completed safely and satisfactorily.
• Maintain records, inventory, and prepare reports on work completed and materials used
• Inspect tools, equipment, and vehicles and maintain supply inventory
• Demonstrate proficiency in working on ladders, lifts, and other work platforms
• Perform office moves and assemble/ move/ deliver furniture and supplies
• Set up tables, chairs, tents, stages and equipment for Garden-related events
• Perform snow removal by using all types of snow clearing equipment, including but not limited to snow blowers and shovels.
• Participate in all training provided by the Garden
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• 3-5 years of experience in general maintenance work, preferably in plumbing, masonry, carpentry, and electrical. Must pass a written and practical exam and be able to work weekends.
• Driver’s license required.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification required or the ability to obtain certification within six months of hire date.

Physical Demand & Work Environment

• Ability to move up to 50 pounds and lift overhead, stand for long periods of time, and work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

Work Schedule

• Thursday-Mon 8AM - 4PM

Regular Days Off: Tuesday and Wednesday

Salary

• $53,997 (62,097)
• Current Garden union employees that have been employed for 2 years qualify for the higher salary rate. If a non-Garden and non-union applicant is appointed, they will be eligible to advance to the higher incumbent rate after two years
