Job summary

Brooklyn Botanic Garden is seeking a Maintainer to support rebuilding, repairing, and maintaining machinery, equipment, and facilities across garden buildings and infrastructure. The role operates under general supervision with a Monday–Friday schedule after training, 7 a.m.

to 3 p.m. Requirements include a high school diploma or GED and at least five years of paid building maintenance experience; candidates must obtain several Certificates of Fitness within six months.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of five (5) years of paid experience in building maintenance.
• Certificates of Fitness (FDNY) must be obtained within six months of hire or paid by the Garden.

Responsibilities

• Perform or supervise general maintenance and specialized work including automotive repairs, electrical systems, painting, glazing, stonework, woodworking, and shop work.
• Assist in the repair and maintenance of machinery and specialized equipment.
• Repair and maintain HVAC systems and plumbing fixtures.
• Maintain records and prepare reports on work performed and materials used.
• Perform other related duties or special projects as assigned.

Position Title: Maintainer

FLSA Status : Full-time, Non-exempt Grade: Union

Position Description:

Under general supervision, the maintainer assists in rebuilding, repairing, and maintaining machinery, equipment, and facilities. This role supports the upkeep of Garden buildings and infrastructure and performs related duties as needed.

**After a training period, the maintainer will work a Monday-Friday schedule from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.**

Primary Responsibilities/Activities:

• Perform or supervise general maintenance and specialized work including automotive repairs, electrical systems, painting, glazing, stonework, woodworking, and shop work.
• Assist in the repair and maintenance of machinery and specialized equipment.
• Repair and maintain HVAC systems and plumbing fixtures.
• Maintain records and prepare reports on work performed and materials used.
• Perform other related duties or special projects as assigned

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED
• Minimum of five (5) years of paid experience in building maintenance

Certificates of Fitness (FDNY):

• COF P-15 (Handle Motor Fuel-Dispensing and Fleet Service Station)
• COF A-35 (Operate and Maintain Air Compressors)
• COF G-60 (Torch Use of Flammable Gases)
• Candidates must possess these certificates or have the ability to obtain them within six months of hire; any required Certificates of Fitness obtained after hire will be at the Garden’s expense.

Skills/Abilities:

• Ability to pass written and/or practical test
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
• Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed

Compensation and Benefits:

• Salary Range - $53,997 - $62,097 Brooklyn Botanic Garden considers several factors when determining the appropriate salary to offer a candidate within the listed salary range. These factors include (but are not limited to), the scope and responsibilities of the position, a candidate's relevant work experience and education/training, prior union/DC37 experience (for union positions), job skills, and equity across the institution, as well as market and organizational considerations.
