Qualifications

  • Juris doctorate degree required.
  • Licensed to practice law by the Supreme Court for at least four years.
  • Judicial/magistrate continuing education required and paid by the employer.
  • Ability to successfully complete all required continuing legal education.

Responsibilities

  • Preside over first chair in forcible entry and detainer and related criminal and civil matters as assigned by the Court to the Magistrates.
  • Research case law, statutes, and other sources to support decisions.
  • Analyze legal decisions, cases and documents.
  • Control and maintain courtroom procedure and conduct on part of attorneys and litigants.
  • Monitor, manage and control hearing times to ensure timely case resolution.
  • Review daily filings processed by the Clerk’s Office for assigned cases.

Job description

Preside over first cause of action in forcible entry and detainer complaints, driving under suspension citations, replevin actions, minor misdemeanor Division of Natural Resources citations, Division of Watercraft citations, littering citations, minor misdemeanor criminal citations, non-jailable criminal offenses and inspection cases, other criminal cases as may be assigned by the Court to the Magistrates. Employees of the Court are At-Will Employees and serve at the pleasure of the Court.

  • Research case law, statutes, secondary legal sources, local/evidentiary rules and proposed legislation using hard-copy and computerized research materials.
  • Analyze legal decisions, cases and documents.
  • Control and maintain courtroom procedure and conduct on part of attorneys and litigants.
  • Monitor, manage and control hearing times to ensure that cases are heard in a timely manner.
  • Review daily filings processed by the Clerk’s Office for assigned cases.
