Job summary

The Machinist - Intermediate at S&C Electric Company is responsible for setting up and operating both CNC and manual machines to produce precision parts for our power grid equipment. You will read blueprints, select tools, and ensure parts meet specifications while maintaining documentation and quality standards.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience setting up and operating manual and CNC punching, cutting, forming machines, or press brakes.
  • Ability to use hand tools and precision measuring instruments (scales, height gauge, micrometers, calipers).
  • Knowledge of machine controls and programs (G and M codes) with ability to set up machines for new jobs.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Strong self-motivation to work independently and meet material requests.
  • Good written and verbal communication to coordinate with team.
  • Basic computer skills for internal applications.
  • Strong math skills for quantities and measurements.
  • Ability to follow Health, Safety & Environment procedures.
  • Excellent attention to detail and quality standards.

  • 6:00 am- 2:30 pm (Monday- Friday)
  • Overtime Daily or Saturdays as required by Production
Compensation

At S&C, we are dedicated to providing competitive and equitable compensation for all our team members, with a commitment to transparency in our pay practices. The estimated hourly base pay rate for this position is $27.25. This role is also eligible for S&C's annual short-term incentive bonus, subject to eligibility criteria.

Join Our Team as a Machinist!

The Machinist - Intermediate is responsible for setting up and operating a variety of machines, including both CNC and manually-controlled equipment, to produce precision, occasionally complex parts for S&C products. The Machinist interprets blueprints in order to determine part specifications and uses various machines to craft them. They also complete basic documentation and maintenance tasks to ensure processes run smoothly, move materials, and support Basic-level team members.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate various manual and CNC machines to fabricate parts according to standard specifications.
  • Set up machines with the appropriate tools and materials according to standard specifications, including the basic physical reconfiguration of the machine to complete new jobs and the setup of various specifications in computer-operated machines if applicable.
  • Interpret blueprints, drawings, and other technical specifications to understand the requirements for basic and moderately complex parts and ensure accurate fabrication.
  • Perform basic routine maintenance on machines and tools to ensure longevity and quality fabrication, including cleaning and reporting mechanical/electrical issues to department leaders.
  • Utilize an overhead crane and other material handling equipment to safely position materials for machining.
  • Complete first piece inspection of parts using various measurement tools, confirming pieces are the correct material, quality, and specifications before beginning the machining process. Document measurement per interal quality check sheets.
  • Maintain accurate records of fabrication activities, including tracking the progress of job orders and documenting corrective action needed for the machine, part, or process.
  • Deburr metal parts using hand and/or power tools, ensuring materials are safe to handle and are in a state that's ready for further processing.
  • Mentors basic-level team members in the completion of their work to help their professional growth.
  • Meet department targets and consistently adhere to quality and safety standards.
  • Understand and comply with all applicable Company policies and rules.
  • Work with departmental mentors to gain and apply feedback in pursuit of improved work quality.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with others.
  • Attend in-person or virtual meetings as requested or required.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
What you'll Need To Succeed:
  • 3+ year of demonstrated experience with the set-up and operation of manual and computer-controlled punching, cutting, forming machines, or press brakes.
  • Ability to use hand tools and precision measuring instruments such as scales, height gage, micrometers and calipers.
  • Good knowledge of machine controls and programs (G and M codes) with the ability to setup machines to operate new jobs to specific specifications.
  • Ability to read blueprints
  • Ability to work independently and meet requirements of assigned materials requests.
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to articulate information efficiently and effectively to team members in a variety of production support departments.
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to review and respond to requests via internal applications.
  • Basic math skills with the ability to calculate quantities, weights, and measurements.
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to understand and complete requests given by team member inside and outside of the department.
  • Ability and willingness to follow Health Safety & Environment procedures accurately, reporting concerns promptly to the safety action team.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous manufacturing experience preferred.
Physical demands:
  • Standing: All tasks are performed in a standing position with intermittent walking.
  • Lifting: Frequent lifting of parts and materials ranging from 5 lbs. to 40 lbs.
  • Walking: Occasional walking moderate distances within the production area.
  • Carrying: Frequent carrying of parts and production materials.
  • Pushing/Pulling: Occasional pushing and pulling of carts, pallet jacks, plating equipment, and other material handling equipment.
  • Bending: Frequent bending and crouching to safely handle parts of various sizes and shapes.
  • Reaching: Continuous range of motion, including reaching above shoulders and below knees.
  • Handling: Continuous handling of parts ranging from small components to larger assemblies.
  • Other: Respirator certification will be required. Employees will be required to wear chemical-resistant PPE, including Tyvek suits, gloves, face shields, and other protective equipment while performing chemical-related tasks.
