Job summary

Applied Materials in Birch Grove, MT is seeking a full-time CNC machinist to safely operate mills and lathes to produce prototype and production parts. You will support internal customers across manufacturing, engineering, and facilities while following blueprints and Work Orders to select tooling and set-ups.

The role requires practical machining skills, accuracy in measurements, and a collaborative, customer-focused mindset to maintain high-quality outputs in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Can safely operate a CNC Mill or CNC Lathe performing moderately complex operations to produce prototype and production parts.
  • Supports in-house customers such as manufacturing, engineering, business units, and facilities; conveys a customer-service approach.
  • Determines machining process, tooling and fixtures from Work Orders, blueprints, sketches and instructions.
  • Performs machining and assembly tasks using standard shop equipment (grinders, drills, saws, etc.).
  • Plans and performs moderately complex machine set-ups; uses basic trig to set angles and use capacity efficiently.
  • Executes milling, turning, drilling, threading, reaming, and chamfering; verifies part dimensions.
  • Performs visual and dimensional inspections using calipers, micrometers, gauges, indicators; conducts rework as needed.
  • Maintains cleanliness and proper handling of tools and stock; adheres to safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Can safely operate a CNC Mill or CNC Lathe performing moderately complex operations in producing prototype parts, production parts, modifications and repairs to existing parts and assemblies, and/or fabricating parts from steels, stainless steels, aluminum, plastics and other non-metals.
  2. Supports in-house customers, such as manufacturing, engineering, business units, direct/indirect materials, and facilities. Portrays a customer service approach. Interfaces effectively and courteously with customers.
  3. Utilizes Work Orders, blueprints, sketches, written and verbal instructions to determine machining process, procedures, tooling and fixtures requirements.
  4. Performs a variety of machining and/or assembly tasks utilizing standard machine shop equipment, such as surface grinders, drill presses, grinders, sanders, band saws, rotary table, and/or standard band and power tools.
  5. Plans and performs moderately complex machine set-ups. Possesses a basic knowledge of trigonometry, which is required to accurately calculate angles used in set-ups and machining. Makes full use of machine capacity to minimize amount of machining or number of set-ups required to product parts competitively.
  6. Performs machining operations, such as milling, turning, facing, boring, chasing single and multiple external and internal threads, drilling, grooving, reaming and chamfering. Monitor machines and verify that part dimensions conform to specifications.
  7. Performs visual and dimensional inspections to verify compliance with specifications. Uses calipers, micrometers, gauges, indicators, and other inspection tools. Performs rework as necessary.
  8. Maintains cleanliness of the work area and ensures proper handling of tools, equipment, and stock to prevent loss. Conforms to departmental safety requirements.

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.

For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
