Job summary

L3Harris Technologies is seeking a Machinist B at our Orange, VA site. The role sets up and operates lathes, milling machines and grinders to produce parts to exact tolerances, following blueprints and specifications.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Use, adjust, clean and store tools, machinery and equipment used.
  • Keep records and reports of the use of equipment.

Job Description

The Aerojet Rocketdyne Segment of L3Harris is seeking a Machinist B to work at our Orange, VA location. Our site near Culpeper, VA, in beautiful, rural Orange County (1.5 hours from Washington, DC) is growing! This site is our center of excellence for Solid Rocket Motor Propulsion and Energetics development as well as high‑complexity production programs. The position sets up and operates a variety of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, precision grinders, etc., to make parts, mechanisms, tools, or machines to exacting tolerances and dimensions.

Essential Functions
  • Interpret blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications; determine sequence of operations, number of cuts required and method of setup and arrangement; work with a variety of machinist’s hand tools and precision measuring instruments; make shop computations; fit and put together precision parts and determine material, parts and equipment required.
  • Fabricate piece parts per work instructions, drawings and specifications through the use of required machine tools; inspect piece parts per work instruction and drawing requirements; set up and operate machine tools.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Use, adjust, clean and store the tools, machinery and equipment used.
  • Keep records and reports of the use of equipment.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 4 years of prior machinist experience or 2 years post‑secondary/Associate’s Degree with 0‑2 years of prior machinist experience.
Preferred Additional Skills
  • Experience as a manual machinist on a conventional lathe and CNC machining in an industrial/manufacturing environment.
  • A trade school certification or state‑licensed Journeyman Machinist certification.
  • Manual machining experience.
  • Working knowledge of setting up the operation of milling machines and lathes.
  • Working knowledge of engineering drawings, blueprints, production plans and/or work instructions.
  • Working knowledge of performing in‑process inspection of finished parts utilizing appropriate inspection and gauging equipment.
  • Knowledge of industry applicable laws, codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Knowledge of machine tools and equipment, machine shop procedures and practices, principals and properties.
  • Knowledge of basic math principles to solve problems.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and relate to all levels of employees.
Salary and Benefits

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role is $18.27/hr - $33.65/hr. The specific offer may vary based on experience and geographic location. Benefits include health and disability insurance, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, employee assistance program, education assistance, parental leave, paid time off, and company‑paid holidays. Programs and options available may vary depending on date of hire, schedule type, and collective bargaining agreements.
