Job Summary

The Machinist and CNC Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and supporting both CNC and conventional machining processes to produce precision components in accordance with engineering drawings and specifications. Reporting to the Machine Shop Manager, this role includes preparing machines, selecting tooling, loading materials, running production cycles, monitoring equipment for quality, performing manual machining tasks, making adjustments to maintain tight tolerances, and conducting routine inspections using measurement tools. The position also involves identifying issues such as tool wear or process deviations, communicating concerns promptly, and performing basic preventive maintenance to minimize downtime, all while maintaining strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and adherence to safety and quality standards in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Load raw materials and components into CNC manual lathe and manual milling machines.
  • Program and operate CNC mills, lathes, or routers according to work instructions and safety guidelines.
  • Read and interpret basic blueprints, job travelers, and production documents.
  • Perform machine offsets and minor adjustments to maintain part quality.
  • Inspect parts using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other measuring tools. Monitor machine performance and report issues to machinists or supervisors.
  • Deburr, clean, and package finished parts.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workstation.
  • Follow all safety and quality standards.
Skills and Requirements
  • 5+ years CNC machining experience.
  • Fusion 360 or Master Cam programming experience.
  • Expert knowledge of machining processes, and shop safety practices, including exposure to 3‑axis and 5‑axis CNC machining.
  • Familiarity with CAM software workflows and knowledge of CNC programming concepts (e.g., toolpaths, feeds and speeds, G/M codes), with an understanding of how these apply to multi‑axis machining.
  • Ability to read and use measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and indicators.
  • Ability to interpret simple engineering drawings, including basic tolerances and part features.
  • Mechanical aptitude with strong attention to detail, problem‑solving skills, and a commitment to producing quality parts.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, handle repetitive tasks, and lift moderate weights as required.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma required; vocational training, machining coursework, or certifications in CNC operation, CAM programming, or 5‑axis machining technology preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move between workstations for extended periods throughout the shift.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull materials, tooling, and parts up to 40–50 lbs on a regular basis.
  • Sufficient hand‑eye coordination and manual dexterity to operate CNC controls, handle precision tools, and load/unload parts.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, or reach as needed for machine setup, maintenance, and part inspection.
  • Adequate vision—corrected or uncorrected—to read measurement tools, view CNC displays, and inspect parts (including close‑up and depth perception).
  • Ability to tolerate working near running machinery, coolant systems, and moderate noise levels, with proper PPE.
  • Ability to remain focused and attentive while performing repetitive tasks in a fast‑paced production environment.
