Job description

The Machinist is responsible for setting up, programming, and operating CNC machines to produce precision metal parts in small batches, including single piece prototypes, and repair/rebuilds. The Machinist will work on a variety of machines, such as vertical milling machines and horizontal lathes, ensuring products meet precise specifications set by engineering through drawings or verbal instructions.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area and comply with the company's safety requirements while meeting time estimates assigned to each job.
  • Set up, program, and operate various pieces of machine shop equipment with minimal supervision; machine components to high-quality standards and tolerance requirements of +/- .0005 to +/- .005 inches.
  • Adjust and monitor assigned equipment to ensure dimensional part integrity.
  • Deburr, buff, and/or sand parts to meet requirements to print specifications.
  • Inspect parts visually and dimensionally using advanced shop inspection equipment and techniques to ensure conformance to requirements.
  • Complete all applicable documentation for current operations.
  • Study, understand, and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, and/or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or workpieces as guides and prepare material for subsequent machining.
  • Select, align, and secure fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials.
  • Start and observe machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjust machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verify conformance of finished workpieces to specifications.
  • Set up and operate machines on trial runs to verify the accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
  • Program CNC controls, both G-code and conversational, to optimize machining processes and improve efficiency.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior machinists, sharing best practices and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Confer with engineers, production personnel, and programmers to resolve complex machining or assembly issues.
  • Must be flexible and willing to work in all areas of operation as directed by the supervisor.

Credentials and Experience
  • High School graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Post-high school technical education preferred.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in a manufacturing environment, with at least 4 years in a CNC programming and machining role.
  • Experience in mentoring or leading junior machinists is highly desirable.
Schedule

Full time position. A four-month 9/80 work schedule (a two-workweek schedule consisting of eight 9-hour days, one 8-hour day, and one scheduled day off). Then the schedule transitions to a standard Monday through Friday workweek, with timing adjusted based on business needs.
