Job summary

Hawthorne Cat, Lakeside Shop in Lakeside, CA, is seeking a Machinery Service Technician 1 to repair and rebuild Caterpillar gear in our service shop or on site. You will diagnose issues, replace parts, perform updates, and document work with accuracy, while meeting schedule targets.

The role requires 2–5 years of heavy equipment repair experience, apprenticeship or diesel tech training, and a valid CA driver license. Familiarity with DBS, ServiceLink, and crane operations is a plus.

Qualifications

• Two to five (2-5) years of experience in the repair of Caterpillar products, or other heavy equipment.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of apprenticeship program or graduation from an accredited technical school with emphasis on diesel technology.
• Knowledge of basic hand tools, air tools, precision measuring tools and instruments, laptops, diagnostic software and cranes/rigging equipment.
• Must be able to obtain a passing crane qualification test performed by a Hawthorne trainer.
• Must pass Lock Out / Tag Out & Forklift certification class provided by Hawthorne trainer.
• Must have a valid California Driver’s License with a clean record.

POSITION SUMMARY: With minimal supervision the Machinery Service Tech 1 (Rentals) will perform duties as assigned by management in the repair, maintenance and/or rebuilding of equipment in the service shop or field, in a safe, efficient and capable manner in the least amount of labor hours necessary, and without rework.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Analyze and diagnose issues on all Caterpillar and allied equipment.
• Remove and install parts, disassemble, and assemble components, and test and adjust assemblies with minimal supervision
• Perform Caterpillar updates as directed by Caterpillar, Inc.
• Analyze all Caterpillar and allied product equipment systems and components for proper operation in arrangement application based on theory of design.
• Effectively communicate with peers and supervisors.
• Organize jobs in a logical and economical sequence.
• Utilize Cat Interact/ ServiceLink and other systems (computer programs) as required.
• Order parts through DBS (Dealer Business System).
• Enter labor time daily (DBS).
• Perform assigned work within the communicated time quoted/flat rated.
• Complete assigned jobs to meet flat rate times with minimal to no rework.
• Write service reports that accurately document diagnosis and repairs performed on a daily basis.
• Attend toolbox meetings as required.
• Adhere to all company policies.
• Follow contamination control and OSHA/MSHA rules and regulations.
• Perform other duties as directed by lead or Service Supervisor.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Two to five (2-5) years of experience in the repair of Caterpillar products, or other heavy equipment.
• Prefer to have one of the following:
• Successful completion of apprenticeship program.
• Graduation from an accredited technical school with emphasis on diesel technology.
• General knowledge of basic hand tools, air tools, precision measuring tools and instruments, laptops, diagnostic software and cranes/rigging equipment.
• Ability to provide accurate information to lead/supervisor for quoting.
• Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment;
• Ability to manage competing demands;
• Able to change approach or method to best fit the situation;
• Able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
• Must be able to obtain a passing score for the crane qualification test performed by a qualified Hawthorne trainer for this position.
• Ability to work unsupervised efficiently and be part of a team environment.
• Must be able to pass the Lock Out / Tag Out & Forklift certification class provided by a qualified Hawthorne trainer for this position.
• Performs the position with pride in professionalism while following Hawthorne’s code of conduct.
• Possesses basic computer knowledge and ability to use service software required in position.
• Must have valid California Driver’s License with a clean record.
• Shop Requirements: Valid California Class “C” driver’s license.
