The Division of Engineering Services (DES), Materials Engineering and Testing Services (METS) is looking to hire a Supervisor of Machine Shop in the Office of Central Laboratories (OCL).

Under the general direction of a Senior Bridge Engineer, the Supervisor of Machine Shop, supervises the staff and work of the Structural Materials Testing Branch (SMTB), machine shop and is responsible for the maintenance of equipment and the design and manufacture of special equipment and other related work.

The Supervisor of Machine Shop will assign work and deadlines for projects submitted by METS personnel, Headquarters, Districts, and other approved agencies. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining safe conditions in the shop area. The incumbent will train new employees in the proper use of machines and other equipments. The incumbent is responsible for the preparation of design drawings using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software and the programming and operation of Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machines. The incumbent is responsible for the purchase of materials and equipments as a CalCard holder, and for the proper storage and maintenance of purchase records and materials inventory. As a working supervisor, the incumbent oversees and performs shop work, as required, to prepare specimens for the Structural Materials Testing Branch (SMTB) Quality Assurance (QA) testing of structural materials, within the allowable turnaround time, to ensure compliance with the performance for these acceptance tests.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Working Conditions

Position located in Sacramento, SacramentoCounty.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

For most of each day, the employee will work in a machine shop and may be exposed to dirty surfaces and equipment, odors, hot liquids, flames and hot equipment. For some part of each day, the employee will work in a climate-controlled office. Both environments are under artificial lighting. The employee may occasionally be required to travel and work outdoors, and may be exposed to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, and/or extreme heat or cold.

New toState candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification orminimum of alternate range when applicable.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

The incumbent should have experience performing skilled machinist work in constructing and repairing equipment and instrumentations. May use other shop skills such as sheet metal, welding, wood work, electrical, and plumbing in performing the work. The incumbent must coordinate Machine Shop activities making efficient use of available work force, draft correspondence and serve in lead capacity to complete assigned work. Incumbent should be capable of working and communicating with other personnel effectively. Must have the ability to learn and practice safe machine shop procedures.
