Job summary

Maguire, a long‑standing manufacturer of water storage tanks and towers, is seeking a Machine Operator to run computerized equipment that forms precision metal parts. You’ll read blueprints, input data, monitor programs, and adjust settings to ensure accurate cuts on plate steel.

The role requires strong math, problem solving, and mechanical aptitude, with experience in reading drawings and operating cranes or forklifts.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience operating a forklift, heavy equipment, and overhead cranes preferred.
  • Some experience operating computerized machines preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working understanding of computers.
  • Thorough understanding of the robotic or computer-operated machinery to be used.
  • Ability to operate highly technical machinery and basic hand tools.
  • Ability to read blueprints and measuring devices.
  • Strong math skills.
  • Ability to self-diagnose and problem solve.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operates equipment designed to move, roll, press, or cut plate steel.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, diagrams, and other project specifications, then inputs commands for computer-controlled machinery.
  • Recognizes when programming is faulty or machine malfunctions and adjusts feed, speed, or tools to correct issues.
  • Monitors control panels and detects malfunctions by comparing readings to specifications.
  • Calculates proper speed, feed ratios, and cut positions.
  • Adjusts cutting programs as needed and saves revised versions.
  • Ensures pieces are lubricated and cooled correctly.
  • Ensures machines run safely and efficiently, and replaces worn parts.
  • Uses hoists, cranes, or manual handling to move pieces to machines.
  • Measures finished pieces to meet order specifications.
  • Corrects production errors by consulting with supervisors and programmers.
  • Maintains, cleans, and repairs machines.
  • Adheres to safety rules and PPE policies.

Job description

For over 100 years, Maguire has been an industry leader in the fabrication, construction, and maintenance of water storage tanks and elevated water towers. The Machine Operator will operate computerized equipment to form precision metal parts. Machines will consist of rollers, presses and plasma tables.

The shift operates Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; 12-hour days (6:00am-6:30pm). Work 36 hours and get paid for 40 as long as specific conditions are met!

Essential Functions:

  • Safely operates equipment designed to move, roll, press, or cut plate steel.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, diagrams, and other project specifications, then identifies and inputs the commands and data needed for computer-controlled machinery to manufacture the tools, parts, or products required.
  • Recognizes when automatic programming is faulty, or when the machine is malfunctioning or in need of maintenance, and modifies feed, speed, cutting tools, or controls of the machine to correct the issue.
  • Monitors control panel displays and machine operation and detects malfunctions and errors by comparing readings to actual specifications.
  • Calculates the proper speed and feed ratios for machines, as well as the size and position of cuts necessary.
  • Adjusts cutting programs as needed during operation; saves revised versions of programs as needed for future use.
  • Ensures work pieces are lubricated and cooled correctly throughout machine operation.
  • Ensures machines run in a safe and efficient manner by adding attachments, aligning pieces, securing fixtures, or replacing broken or dull parts.
  • Uses hoists, crane, or personal strength to lift work pieces to machines.
  • Measures finished pieces with precision measuring tools and equipment to ensure they meet order specifications.
  • Corrects production errors or machine malfunctions by conferring with supervisors and programmers; obtains approval to continue production after correction is made.
  • Maintains, cleans, and repairs machines.
  • Adheres to all safety rules and guidelines.

Work Environment:

  • Must have enough manual dexterity and stability as required for precision work.
  • Must be able to work outside in both a hot and cold environments.
  • Prolonged periods standing and walking.
  • Adhere to Maguire's Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Policy and Safety Programs.
  • Requires close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to work with ladders, catwalks and in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to traverse facilities and machinery by climbing, balancing, lifting, walking, stooping, and carrying materials.
