Job summary

SPX Technologies is seeking a Machinist to set up and operate conventional and CNC machines to fabricate metallic parts in our Electric Heat division. The role emphasizes accuracy, safety, and collaboration with engineering staff.

You will read blueprints and specifications, measure parts, adjust feeds and speeds, and verify final dimensions, ensuring products meet tight tolerances in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

• One to three months related experience and/or training.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Completion of machinist courses (at least eight terms) at an accredited technical school preferred.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate conventional and CNC machines to fabricate metallic parts.
• Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances.
• Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions on material for machining.
• Align and secure holding fixtures and cutting tools on machines.
• Set controls to regulate speed, feed, coolant flow and depth of cut; input program data as needed.
• Start and monitor machine operation; adjust controls to correct malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining.
• Verify conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
• Assemble parts into complete assemblies and verify alignment.
• Install machined parts into mechanisms and test operation of unit to ensure functionality.

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As a Machine Operator, you will set up and operate conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic parts.

What You Can Expect In This Role (Job Responsibilities)

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

• Design and/or develop tolls, jigs, and fixtures used in production.
• Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
• Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
• Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
• Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
• Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
• Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
• Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
• Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly.
• Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.
• Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
• Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
• Develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated.
• Confers with engineers, production personnel, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

Required Experience

• One to three months related experience and/or training

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• A fully qualified Machinist will have completed, including passing a written test, and satisfactory completion of at least eight terms of machinist courses at an accredited technical school
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

Travel & Working Environment

• Employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
• Employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
