Job summary

BlueScope Buildings North America is seeking a Machine Operator 2 to fabricate materials and operate computer-controlled equipment in a manufacturing environment. The role involves interpreting blueprints, downloading programs, setting up tooling, and ensuring quality through inspections.

The incumbent will monitor machinery, optimize material usage, and participate in continuous improvement activities, using measuring tools and PPE as required.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent; ACT WorkKeys assessed.
• 6 months of experience with computer-controlled equipment (automatic or semiautomatic).
• Certificate from technical school or 6 additional months experience preferred.
• 1 year experience in operating computerized equipment preferred.

Responsibilities

• Observe operation to ensure product quality and adjust as needed.

I. Summary of Primary Purpose of the Position

Summarize in 2 to 4 sentences the primary function and value of the position. Under general supervision, the Machine Operator 2 and uses judgement to fabricate material using equipment with a moderate degree of complexity. The Machine Operator 2 reads and interprets blueprints and diagrams and operates a variety of equipment involved in daily manufacturing processes, including computer-controlled, automatic, or semi-automatic machines. The Machine Operator 2 performs computer downloads containing specifications that direct the machine to operate efficiently.

II. Primary Duties & Responsibilities *

• Observe machine during operation to monitor quality of finished product and/or material issues, adjusting machine as necessary

• Download or generate computer programs to direct machine for proper operation and specification for job as needed.
• 10%
• Set up and operate machines with proper tooling and consumables for current job needs

• Maintain material reporting and plan best material usage to maximize finished products with least amount of raw material used.

• Use appropriate measuring tools, processes, and systems to perform First Piece Inspection and other quality checks before, during and after production to confirm material and/or product meets specifications

• Actively participates in continuous improvement and corrective action activities

• Use lifting devices and mobile equipment to place materials/parts where needed

• Perform housekeeping, 5-S, and other duties as assigned

IV. Tools Required

• Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as outlined in the role specific Job Safety Analysis
• Computer/Oracle ERP
• Prints/tablet drawings
• Calculator
• Slings and rigging equipment
• Overhead crane and/or hoists. May require other mobile equipment.
• Variety of measuring tools including square, tape measure, caliper, micrometer, etc.
• Variety of hand tools including grinder, hands free tooling, etc.

V. Education & Experience Qualifications

Minimum:

• High School diploma or equivalent, or attain ACT WorkKeys Assessment at certified job profile skill level
• 6 months of relevant experience operating computer-controlled equipment, including automatic or semi-automatic machines

Preferred:

• Certificate from technical school or 6 additional months of relevant experience and/or training in computer-controlled equipment, including automatic or semi-automatic machines.
• 1 year of experience operating computer-controlled equipment, including automatic or semi-automatic machines

VI. Skills & Competencies

• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and make decisions based on them
• Capable of watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly
• Ability to evaluate a variety of large equipment and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper operation of machine
• Good communication skills
• Mobile equipment and crane operation skills
• Knowledge of raw materials sizes, production processes, quality control, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods
• Knowledge of machines and tools, general operation, repair, and maintenance
