Job summary

LexisNexis is seeking a Principal AI Engineer to lead architecture and production AI solutions. You will translate complex requirements into scalable, secure AI capabilities, working with product managers, data scientists, engineers, and government stakeholders.

This role balances hands-on development with technical strategy, establishing standards, guardrails, and governance while mentoring teams and shaping AI strategy across the organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in CS/Engineering/Data science or related field; or equivalent practical experience.
  • Production AI applications or platforms development experience.
  • Hands-on Python, APIs, cloud services, data pipelines, and source control.
  • Experience with generative AI: LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, AI agents.
  • Cloud-native architecture, system integration, security practices.
  • Ability to obtain Public Trust clearance.

Responsibilities

  • AI Solution Design and Development: design, prototype, and implement AI-powered applications, services, agents, and workflows.
  • Translate requirements into practical AI solutions using LLMs, NLP, CV, and other AI tech.
  • Develop reusable AI components, APIs, evaluation frameworks, and reference implementations.
  • Balance rapid experimentation with disciplined engineering for secure, reliable production systems.

About The Role

Principal AI Engineer - Architecture Track

LexisNexis is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal AI Engineer to join its team, focusing on designing and building production-grade AI solutions. This role offers an exciting opportunity for an individual with a strong engineering background in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and system architecture to grow into a broader AI Architect role. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, data scientists, software engineers, security specialists, and government stakeholders, to translate complex business and mission requirements into secure, scalable, and reusable AI capabilities. The role balances hands-on solution development with strategic responsibilities, including establishing architecture standards, technical strategy, governance, and fostering cross-team collaboration to drive innovation and operational excellence.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, data science, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Significant professional experience in software engineering, particularly in delivering production applications or platforms, is essential. Candidates should demonstrate hands-on expertise in developing AI, machine learning, or data-intensive solutions, with proficiency in Python and familiarity with APIs, cloud services, data pipelines, and source control. Experience with modern generative AI patterns such as large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, and AI agents is highly preferred. A solid understanding of cloud-native architecture, system integration, security practices, and evaluation of AI frameworks is required. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams are vital. Candidates must also meet government background and security clearance requirements, including the ability to obtain Public Trust clearance.

Responsibilities

AI Solution Design and Development:

  • Design, prototype, and implement AI-powered applications, services, agents, and workflows aligned with mission and business needs.
  • Translate complex requirements into practical technical solutions utilizing large language models, NLP, computer vision, and other AI technologies.
  • Develop reusable AI components, APIs, evaluation frameworks, and reference implementations that integrate into enterprise platforms and data sources.
  • Balance rapid experimentation with disciplined engineering to ensure secure, reliable, and scalable production systems.
  • Evaluate models, platforms, and vendors to determine optimal solutions based on performance, security, and cost considerations.
Architecture And Technical Leadership
  • Contribute to comprehensive solution architectures covering applications, data, models, security, and operational monitoring.
  • Partner with senior architects to establish AI architecture standards, guardrails, and reference models.
  • Assist teams in making informed decisions regarding AI capabilities, including open-source, commercial, and internally developed options.
  • Identify opportunities to create shared AI services and reusable capabilities across various products and government agencies.
  • Participate in architecture reviews, documenting technical decisions, tradeoffs, and associated risks.
  • Provide mentorship, code reviews, and hands-on support to engineering and data science teams, fostering technical excellence.
  • Assume ownership of end-to-end AI solution architecture and contribute to broader technical strategy development.
Government And Stakeholder Engagement
  • Support technical discovery sessions, demonstrations, proofs of concept, and responses to RFIs and RFPs.
  • Communicate complex AI concepts, limitations, and risks clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Facilitate the transition of prototypes into secure, scalable, and supportable production capabilities.
  • Stay informed about evolving government AI policies, standards, and responsible AI practices to ensure compliance and alignment.
