Job summary

Blue Origin in the United States seeks a hydrogen and oxygen propulsion hardware design engineer to own the fluids and propulsion portions of the MK2 Crew Lander. You will design tubing and mounting hardware, own CAD models, and coordinate analysis through design, verification, and operation.

Work with suppliers and Blue Origin groups to size, select materials, manage project plans, and mentor junior engineers.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering required.
  • Strong CAD modeling and interpretation of fluid system drawings (P&IDs).
  • Experience with fluid hardware design, cryogenic systems, and GD&T.

Job description

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

This role applies engineering techniques to design, install, modify, analyze, repair and test hydrogen and oxygen fluid systems. Development, release, and support of engineering artifacts across the cycle to support hardware fabrication, assembly, verification, test and operations. Implements operating procedures, resolves system malfunctions, and provide technical information. Collaborate with suppliers to deliver; customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications. Specifies system components or directs modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications. Investigates equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations to maintenance crew.

Additional Information

We are looking for a hydrogen and oxygen propulsion hardware design engineer. You will design and build portions of the fluids & propulsion systems for the MK2 Crew Lander including tubing and mounting hardware. Your work will include full ownership of CAD models and coordinating analysis and manufacturing development efforts through the complete life cycle of the system from conceptual design, detailed design, component development, assembly, verification, and operation.

You will work with suppliers or Blue Origin groups to identify and procure components. You will support a team to size, select material, and analyze these components. You will manage suppliers and other support to procure, fabricate, and install flight hardware. You will create and manage the project plans for various hardware including cost and schedule. You may mentor entry level engineers and perform technical peer reviews.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Generating CAD models for hydrogen and oxygen fluid system hardware
  • Leading design for manufacturability efforts for fluid component assemblies
  • Performing basic structural analysis on fluid system hardware
  • Performing basic fluid analysis on fluid system hardware

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related field
  • 8+ years of experience designing cryogenic tubes and fluid components
  • Experience generating 3D models and drawings in Creo for complex fluid hardware
  • Professional experience specifying fluid fittings and mounts
  • Experience performing the structural hand calculations and analysis with tools such as ANSYS.
  • Experience interpreting Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Expertise in ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerance
  • Experience with static and non-linear FEA analysis (ANSYS)
  • Excellent verbal, written, and graphical communication skills with ability to directly interface with external parties including government and commercial entities
  • Ability to earn trust and maintain positive and professional relationships
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:

  • Experience with ProEngineer/Creo, Windchill, and ProPiping
  • Knowledge of standard installation and fabrication methods of metallic structures
  • Experience with heat exchangers
