Job summary

Recology is seeking a maintenance technician to perform safety inspections and preventive maintenance on a range of vehicles and heavy equipment at our facility in San Francisco. You will document work, manage parts usage, and communicate defects for follow‑up actions, while adhering to DOT safety standards.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, 1 year of mechanical maintenance experience with heavy vehicles, and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• One year of preventive maintenance mechanical experience with heavy vehicles.
• Waste and recycling industry experience preferred.
• Experience with DOT Out-of-Service Criteria and related inspections.
• Experience with maintenance facilities and heavy equipment components.
• Knowledge of diesel and/or CNG engines and related tools.
• Basic knowledge of electrical controls and motor systems.
• Familiarity with health and safety regulations on job sites.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Class A CDL and medical with no air brake/automatic transmission restrictions within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance and safety inspections on company vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Accurately complete paperwork and database entries documenting parts and usage; generate repair orders.
• Carry out minor repairs and cleaning of components; perform other maintenance tasks as required.
• Operate forklift and yard equipment as needed.
• Follow company and DOT safety standards; maintain a clean, safe work area.

Job description

2 Shifts:

DAY: Monday-Friday, 6:00am-2:30pm

NIGHT: Monday- Friday, 4:00am-12:30pm

NOTE: Class A required 6 months after hire.

THE ROLE

Under general supervision, performs safety and maintenance inspections, preventive maintenance on vehicles and/or heavy landfill equipment and/or stationary equipment.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, AND ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

• Performs preventive maintenance and safety inspections on any or all company vehicles, heavy landfill equipment and stationary equipment.
• Accurately and efficiently completes paperwork and/or computer database entries relating to the work performed, documenting parts and supply usage. Generates repair orders to communicate defects or areas of concerns for follow up and/or corrective action.
• Performs minor repairs and cleaning of components as required. Performs other maintenance related work as required by supervisor or foreman.
• Operate forklift and other yard equipment as required.
• Performs all work in accordance to company standards and policies and DOT standards for safety.
• Maintains a clean, safe work area in accordance with company policy and federal, state and local requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• One year of preventive maintenance mechanical experience with heavy vehicles.
• Waste and recycling industry experience preferred.
• Experience and knowledge of DOT Out-of-Service Criteria including CHP B.I.T. Inspections and DOT compliance audits.
• Experience working in a maintenance facility or related environment with vehicles, processing equipment such as: balers, conveyors, hoppers, electric motors and landfill equipment preferred.
• Basic knowledge of diesel and/or compressed natural gas engines, heavy equipment mechanical components and use of tools and techniques.
• Knowledge of alternating and direct current electrical controls and motor systems.
• Knowledge of federal, state and local job site health and safety rules, regulations and best practices; understanding of potential job hazards.
• Basic computer programs.
• Valid driver's license.

• Class A Commercial Driver’s License and medical with no air brake or automatic transmission restrictions required within 6 months of hire.
