Job summary

Carilion Clinic is seeking a dedicated Practical Nurse to support the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery section in a day-shift, full-time role in the Roanoke area. The position focuses on reconstructive patients with no cosmetic services, and responsibilities include patient assessments, assisting during exams, and coordinating tele-retinal and tele-dermatology setups.

Qualifications

• Graduate of accredited school of practical nursing required, or new graduate eligible to sit for Virginia licensure exam.
• One year of physician office experience preferred.
• Current licensure as a Practical Nurse in Virginia; Radiologic Technician Limited if radiology is performed; BLS-HCP certification.
• Customer driven with strong communication, professional appearance and problem-solving abilities; proficient with electronic medical records and computer systems.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care for patients of all ages.
• Complete patient assessments including vital signs, chief complaint, and current medications.
• Prepare patients for provider evaluation and assist during exams and procedures.
• Coordinate tele-retinal and tele-dermatology clinic setup and assist with related procedures.
• Administer medications and injections as directed by the provider.
• Maintain clean and stocked work areas and equipment; manage lab and radiology setup as applicable.
• Document patient information in the EMR promptly and accurately.
• Support referrals and pre-authorizations for tests and specialists.
• Assist with lab procedures, specimen collection, and point-of-care testing as trained.
• Assist with radiology procedures and ensure proper documentation of imaging results.

This position will support the section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Carilion Clinic. This clinic has a primary focus on reconstructive patients with no cosmetic or aesthetic services performed. This position will not float to our cosmetic center.

Provides practical nursing support in the delivery of quality care for the patient in a physician practice or clinic setting as directed by the physician or mid-level practitioner. Complies with all federal, state, local, Carilion Clinic, and departmental policies and standards as applicable. Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.

• Provides nursing care for patients of all ages.
• Completes patient assessment to include height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint, current medications, etc.
• Prepares patient for provider evaluation, including obtaining specimens, positioning for exams, listing medications, assisting during exams and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
• Coordinates tele-retinal and tele-dermatology clinic set up.
• Administers medications and injections as directed by the provider.
• Maintains work area, exam, treatment and x-ray rooms and lab in a clean, safe manner; restock with supplies and instruments; sterilize reusable equipment as needed.
• Documents and maintains patient information in the electronic medical record in a timely manner to include update treatment procedures, medication refills, test results, patient concerns, etc.
• Contributes to Carilion Clinic's performance improvement activities.
• Provides patient teaching as indicated and directed by the provider, including lab results, diet instructions, medication instructions, appropriate follow-up, and reinforcing provider instructions as needed.
• Assists with referral authorizations for specialists and pre-authorizations for testing and ancillary services.
• Assists with lab procedures, including collecting urine specimens, collecting and preparing blood samples for reference lab, labeling all specimens with accurate patient ID.
• Observes all safety precautions and standards; assures proper disposal of specimens and contaminated waste.
• LAB (if applicable)
• Performs lab procedures as directed by the provider including phlebotomy, peripheral sticks, collecting and preparing urine specimens, throat smears; conduct lab testing onsite after appropriate training, including waived and moderate complexity studies.
• Prepares equipment to begin testing lab specimens. Runs daily quality control tests as directed by lead clinical/lab staff.
• Adheres to quality control measures with all lab procedures, performing proficiency testing and conducting control testing and calibration on all equipment. Maintains Q/A Plan. Prepares equipment to begin testing lab specimens. Runs daily quality control test as directed by the clinical/lab staff.
• RADIOLOGY (if applicable)
• Performs x-ray procedures as directed by the provider. Takes measures to prevent excessive exposure to patient and self. Completes all documentation and labeling of x-rays.
• Performs any other tasks relating to the operation of the practice that may be assigned or requested for which training has been provided.

What We Require

Education: Graduate of accredited school of practical nursing required, or new graduate of approved program eligible to sit for the Virginia licensure exam.

Experience: One (1) year experience in a physician office preferred.

Licensure/Certification: Current licensure as a Practical Nurse in the State of Virginia (LPN) required. Licensure as a Radiologic Technician Limited if performing radiology. Current AHA BLS-HCP certification required.

Other: Customer driven. Demonstrates a positive demeanor, good verbal and written communication skills, and a professional appearance and approach. Must have the ability to problem-solve and communicate with a wide variety of people in an effective manner. Must exhibit skills to utilize automated computer systems, including electronic medical records. Keyboarding skills required for automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.

Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
