The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides professional nursing care for residents of all ages in long‑term care, under the supervision of a registered nurse, advanced practice provider, or physician. The LPN demonstrates knowledge of nursing principles, applies competency across the full scope of nursing practice, and uses age‑ and population‑specific standards related to the physical and psychosocial needs of the resident as outlined in the care plan. The LPN performs testing to evaluate resident data, provides necessary care, recognizes problems, recommends solutions, and responds effectively in emergent situations.
The LPN ensures the health, comfort, and safety of residents, contributes to resident assessment, administers medications or treatments as ordered, provides technical support to healthcare professionals, documents resident interactions and outcomes related to care, medication, behavior, activity, and diet, and maintains effective relationships with residents, health‑care providers, and the public. The LPN communicates clearly, maintains confidentiality, counsels residents and families under the direction of a registered nurse, advanced practice provider, or physician, and develops self‑care programs. Additional related duties are assigned as needed.
Graduate from an accredited practical nursing program as a Licensed Practical Nurse. An associate degree in practical nursing is preferred. Minimum of 18 years of age, hold an unencumbered LPN license with the State Nursing Board, and obtain required departmental competencies and certifications. Complete required annual continuing education units (CEU) and competency training. If the position requires IV therapy/management, the candidate must have graduated from a Board‑approved AASPN program where IV therapy is part of the curriculum or completed an IV Therapy course approved by the North Dakota Board of Nursing.
