North Shore Country Day, a JK-12 independent school near Chicago, seeks a full-time Lower School Elementary Art Long Term Substitute Teacher (JK-5th) for the remainder of the 2026-2027 school year, starting immediately. North Shore is eager to consider applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in independent school communities.

The Lower School Arts curriculum centers on developing contemporary skills through the exploration of materials such as clay, paint, and mixed-media. A Bachelor’s degree in elementary education or art is preferred. A Master’s degree is encouraged. We seek candidates with three or more years of relevant teaching experience, a demonstrable talent and passion for teaching visual art to Lower School students (Junior Kindergarten through 5th grade), and a commitment to making their classroom a joyful and expressive space for students.

A strong understanding of current trends in aesthetic education, global art history, and diverse expressions of visual culture is desired. Candidates with a current, active practice as a visual artist are preferred. Additionally, we will value candidates who have invested in growing their intercultural competencies and whose teaching practice reflects those understandings and skills both inside and outside the classroom.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, all faculty members are expected to support the lower school community by participating in regular duties, including recesses, lunches and carline, as well as attending regular faculty meetings.
