General Definition of Work

The long-term substitute teacher, under limited supervision, performs instructional work with limited decision‑making discretion serving as a temporary educator who is responsible for operating a safe, orderly and positive classroom environment while the regular classroom teacher position is anticipated to be vacant for 6 or more months. The long-term substitute must effectively manage the classroom and provide instruction for students following the regular teacher's lesson plans, lesson plans developed by the school grade‑level PLC or lesson plans s/he develops in consultation with the school. Employee performs school‑based work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the school principal.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions
  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Provide meaningful instruction to students
  • Review and implement regular classroom routines, procedures, lesson plans and instructional strategies.
  • Participate in grade‑level meetings, faculty meetings, student intervention teams and other committees normally assigned to a regular classroom teacher
  • Establish and maintain a safe and orderly learning environment for all students
  • Take reasonable measures to protect students, facilities, and materials
  • Communicate clearly and effectively to students, families, and school personnel
  • Report all student injuries, accidents, illnesses or any breach of the district's Code of Student Conduct to the school administration as soon as possible
  • Willingness to substitute in any grade level or course as assigned by the school
  • Demonstrate cooperation and flexibility in performing other related duties as assigned
  • Perform related work as assigned or required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of lesson plan development
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement classroom management strategies
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of county and school board policies, procedures, and standards
  • Skilled in communication, both verbal and written
  • Skilled in computers and software including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • Ability to solve problems by utilizing sound judgment
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships; work collaboratively within and across departments, external agencies, and the public
  • Ability to respond appropriately to situations while maintaining a professional and personable demeanor
  • Ability to use or learn specialized tools, equipment, or software

Education and Experience
  • Minimum for 21st Day Substitutes:
    • Bachelors' Degree
    • Possession of an active NC teaching license
    • Three years successful teaching experience preferred
  • Minimum for Certified Long‑term Substitute
    • Bachelor's degree
    • Possession of active or expired teaching license
    • Three years teaching experience preferred
  • Minimum for Non‑Certified Long‑term Substitute
    • High School diploma
    • At least one or more successful years working in an educational environment supervising children preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Requirements
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
