Job summary

The American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, CT seeks a Long-Term Substitute Teacher for the Core/PACES department. This 10-month, benefits-eligible position involves delivering instruction to PACES, Vocational, and Core students.

Under supervision of the departmental principal, you will prepare lessons, write reports, help with IEPs and PPT meetings, and participate in curriculum planning. The role requires ASL proficiency or willingness to learn, and collaboration in a multidisciplinary

• Participates in school curriculum planning, development and revision.
• Implements behavior management programs as necessary.
• Actively supports and utilizes PBIS in all school environments.
• Participates in staff development, may serve as organizational advisor.
• Directs the work of Teacher Aides and Residential Counselors in the classroom.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf, founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed life-long learners.

SCOPE OF DUTIES

• Ability to work in a collaborative team setting.
• Proficiency in American Sign Language required or willingness and commitment to learn

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

• Compensation range is based on experience and available upon request
• Outstanding benefits package including Retirement 403B with generous school matching, group health insurance, and other fringe benefits.
• $1000 sign on bonus after one year of service
