Advance Your Career in Locomotive Maintenance & Repair

Road & Rail Services is seeking an accomplished Locomotive Mechanic / Repair Specialist to support locomotive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair operations across multiple railroad facilities and project locations.

This opportunity is designed for an experienced railroad mechanical professional with a comprehensive understanding of locomotive systems, strong technical troubleshooting capabilities, and the ability to perform complex repairs with minimal supervision.

We are looking for more than general mechanical experience. Successful candidates must possess direct, hands‑on experience maintaining and repairing locomotives, including diesel engines, electrical systems, pneumatic components, and mechanical assemblies.

If you have developed your career in locomotive maintenance and are interested in applying your expertise across diverse railroad operations, this position offers competitive compensation, extensive technical responsibilities, and opportunities for professional growth.

Key Responsibilities

As a Locomotive Mechanic, you will provide specialized technical support to ensure locomotive equipment operates safely, reliably, and efficiently.

  • Conduct comprehensive locomotive inspections, mechanical evaluations, and preventive maintenance.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and diesel engine malfunctions.
  • Troubleshoot locomotive propulsion, braking, air, and auxiliary systems.
  • Perform component replacements, mechanical overhauls, adjustments, and corrective repairs.
  • Utilize electrical schematics, mechanical diagrams, technical manuals, and diagnostic equipment to identify equipment failures.
  • Execute welding, fabrication, cutting, and specialized mechanical repairs as required.
  • Evaluate equipment performance and verify repair effectiveness before returning locomotives to service.
  • Maintain accurate inspection reports, maintenance records, and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with railroad personnel, operations leadership, and maintenance teams to coordinate repair activities.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with applicable Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations, customer requirements, and company safety standards.
  • Provide technical expertise and problem‑solving support at various railroad facilities and project locations.
Required Professional Qualifications

Direct locomotive maintenance and repair experience is mandatory.

We are seeking candidates who demonstrate:

  • Proven professional experience in locomotive mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Advanced working knowledge of diesel locomotive engines and associated mechanical systems.
  • Experience diagnosing electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and locomotive braking systems.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to independently evaluate equipment failures.
  • Proficiency in interpreting electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Hands‑on experience with welding, fabrication, and industrial repair techniques.
  • Familiarity with locomotive inspection requirements and railroad maintenance safety standards.
  • Ability to prioritize maintenance activities, troubleshoot efficiently, and maintain high‑quality workmanship.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and technical documentation skills.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Flexibility to travel extensively in support of operational and customer requirements.
Preferred Professional Backgrounds
  • Railroad Mechanical Specialist
  • Railroad Equipment Maintenance Technician

Experience maintaining general diesel equipment or heavy machinery without direct locomotive repair experience does not satisfy the primary qualification for this position.

This is a travel-based technical position supporting locomotive operations at multiple railroad and industrial facilities.

Candidates must be comfortable working independently, adapting to changing project requirements, and performing maintenance in active railroad environments.
