The Progressive Care Unit is a 37 bed, intermediate-acuity telemetry unit that manages
complex cardiovascular conditions requiring continuous monitoring and advanced nursing
care. The patient population includes acute coronary syndromes, decompensated heart
failure, post-PCI and post-cardiac catheterization patients, arrhythmias requiring
titratable antiarrhythmics, and patients requiring vasoactive drips (non-invasive) and
high-flow oxygen support. Nurses are expected to have strong cardiac rhythm
interpretation skills and experience with titratable infusions, as well as the ability to
recognize subtle clinical changes. While there is an emphasis on cardiac care, these are
not the only cases that are managed on this floor. The Progressive Care Unit does act as a
step-down unit and cares for a variety of medical conditions that can be found on
traditional step-down units.
