Job description

Position Overview

Join a forward‑thinking, nationally recognized team at Penn State Extension as a Livestock Extension Educator with a strong emphasis on production livestock management. This position is based in Lycoming County and serves as part of a statewide team delivering programming across the Commonwealth.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Extension colleagues and faculty to identify critical livestock industry needs, including beef, swine, and small ruminants, and develop relevant educational programming.
  • Design and deliver research‑based learning experiences for producers and stakeholders using diverse formats (in‑person, online, digital publications, videos, webinars, etc.).
  • Contribute to and/or lead applied research and outreach efforts to improve livestock productivity, animal health and welfare, and sustainable management practices.
  • Address topics such as: Beef cattle management, health, nutrition, reproduction, and housing; swine production, health, nutrition, and biosecurity; small ruminant (sheep and goat) management, health, and production systems; parasite control and pasture management; forage and pasture management; and livestock environmental stewardship and nutrient runoff mitigation.
  • Build strong working relationships with producers, agribusiness professionals, government agencies, and other organizations.
  • Actively participate in securing external funding through grants, contracts, and program income.
  • Engage with diverse audiences and work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary, cross‑functional Extension team.
  • Maintain a high level of communication and collaboration with internal colleagues and external partners across the state and beyond.
What We're Looking For
  • A master’s degree or higher in animal science, animal nutrition, or a closely related field, plus two years of relevant experience. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree and exceptional work experience in livestock production will be considered.
  • Broad knowledge of livestock management systems, with a strong preference for candidates experienced in beef, swine, or small ruminant management.
  • Experience or interest in sustainable farm practices, environmental conservation, and engaging Spanish‑speaking audiences (Spanish proficiency valued).
  • Demonstrated skills in program development, adult education, impact evaluation, and grant writing preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and digital content development.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout the state.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this position is $42,100.00 – $74,000.00.
