Job summary

Smithfield Foods is seeking a Herdsperson to assist Herd Technicians in routine animal care and farm tasks, ensuring welfare of pigs. Tasks include feeding, sanitation, movement, and operating farm equipment; training may be provided for advanced designation; role supports animal health, growth, and breeding at the designated site.

The position emphasizes following SOPs, maintaining records, teamwork, flexibility, and adherence to environmental, safety, and biosecurity policies.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED preferred.
• Previous livestock handling helpful.
• Ability to do hard physical labor.
• Weekend, evening and holiday work required.
• Must be on call for emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Feed, water, vaccinate, and perform basic animal husbandry.
• Move animals and maintain efficient animal flows.
• Sanitize and wash farm areas with high pressure equipment.
• Process piglets: inject medications, castrate, dock tails, ear notch.
• Record production information and maintain records as required.
• Follow SOPs and training guides.
• Maintain barn, office cleanliness, and laundry.
• Comply with animal welfare policies and safety laws.
