Position Overview

The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) invites applications for a UC Cooperative Extension Livestock and Natural Resources Advisor, serving Mariposa and Merced counties. The successful candidate will design, implement, and evaluate an extension education and applied research program in livestock production systems, including grazing management, pasture and range management, nutrition, herd health, animal husbandry, genetic selection, reproduction, harvesting/processing, and marketing.

Reporting Relationship

The CE Advisor reports to the UC Cooperative Extension Mariposa and Merced Counties Area County Director.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct applied research and generate science-based solutions for local livestock producers.
• Design and deliver extension activities such as individual consultations, workshops, short courses, field demonstrations, farm visits, radio outreach, webinars, fact sheets, policy briefs, news blogs, and social media content.
• Develop educational outreach programs and research projects that address specific challenges faced by cattle, sheep, goats, and small‑scale poultry enterprises.
• Collaborate with UC Davis faculty, other UCCE Advisors, campus specialists, and community organizations to implement best management practices that improve livestock production, animal health, range and pasture quality, meat processing and marketing, water quality, soil quality, and ecosystem health.
• Serve as a trusted resource for local producers, Farm Bureau and cattlemen’s associations, public resource agencies (NRCS, California Dept of Fish and Wildlife, US Forest Service, BLM, Resource Conservation Districts), nonprofit conservation organizations, and youth groups (4‑H, FFA, Grange).
• Produce written and oral communication products, including newsletters, popular‑press articles, curricula, conference proceedings, and peer‑reviewed manuscripts.
• Minimize negative environmental impacts associated with livestock production through education and outreach.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in animal science, range management, or a closely related field.
• Certified Rangeland Manager license or completion of the required coursework within five years of hire.
• Proof of liability and property‑damage insurance on a vehicle used for fieldwork and a valid California driver’s license.
• Demonstrated experience in applied research, extension, and a strong record of published peer‑reviewed work.
• Previous experience or coursework in range management and livestock production.
• Background investigation, including fingerprinting and criminal‑history clearances, is required.
• Authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship (no visa sponsorship available).
• Availability to work onsite at the headquarters and travel within the assigned counties.

• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; proficiency in Spanish desired.

• Experience with remote outreach methods and digital communication tools.

Salary & Benefits

The Assistant‑Rank salary range for this position is $85,600 (Step I) to $105,200 (Step VI), with step placement based on experience and qualifications.
