About the Position

The Liability and Litigation Manager operates under broad direction with limited oversight, and will be responsible for overseeing and directing the management of complex property and casualty claims and associated litigation across various lines of business (primarily Homeowners and Commercial Property and Casualty), while exercising high discretionary judgment on matters of financial significance. This position interfaces regularly with senior leadership and carrier partners to align outcomes with Swyfft’s strategic and financial objectives. As such, this role requires a sophisticated understanding of insurance law, claim investigation, coverage analysis, litigation strategy, and vendor management to ensure optimal claim resolution and expense control.

This position reports up to the Director of Casualty and Litigation. In this position, you will also be involved in various projects supporting operations, including metrics analysis, quality management of service providers, and data veracity within the claims systems.

*This position is a 100% remote U.S. based opportunity that can be based in one of the following states only: AL, AZ, FL, GA, KY, LA, MA, MO, NC, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI.

Some travel for day-to-day work, team meetings, and training will be required.

Key Responsibilities: (What you'll be asked to do)
  • Litigation Management: Manage and monitor a portfolio of litigated property and liability claims, ensuring timely and appropriate actions by defense counsel. Set litigation budgets, review and approve legal invoices, and participate in key litigation phases, including mediation, arbitration, and trial.
  • Claim Strategy: Develop and execute comprehensive claim handling and resolution strategies for high-exposure and complex property and liability matters. Conduct critical coverage analysis and assist adjusters in determining proper reserves. Exercise sound judgment in setting reserves and evaluating exposures, recognizing how policy wording, case law, and jurisdictional nuances impact liability and indemnity outcomes.
  • Vendor Oversight: Select, onboard, and rigorously manage outside defense counsel, independent adjusters, investigators, and experts, ensuring adherence to billing guidelines and performance metrics.
  • Training and Mentorship: Provide guidance, technical expertise, and mentorship to claims professionals on best practices in claim investigation, negotiation, legal defense, and regulatory compliance.
  • Reporting and Analysis: Prepare detailed reports for senior management on claim trends, litigation outcomes, and reserve adequacy. Analyze claim data to identify potential risks and recommend risk mitigation strategies.
  • Compliance: Ensure all claim handling and litigation activities comply with internal policies, state regulations, and fair claims practices acts.
The Successful Candidate: (What we're looking for)
  • Experience leading, hiring, and developing team members.
  • You're comfortable working in a metrics driven claims environment.
  • You are well versed in and have a great understanding of insurance law.
  • Both internal (your peers) and external clients commend your excellent communication and follow up skills.
  • You inspire confidence in your team and external partners alike through fairness, decisiveness, and a solutions-oriented mindset.
  • You “think on your feet” and provide solutions to complex situations.
  • You bring intellectual curiosity, empathy, and a command of both the art and science of claim resolution.
  • You're detail oriented, organized, and can multi-task like nothing anyone has ever seen before.
  • You're a get-the-job-done, self-starter that thrives in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Some Requirements
