Job summary

Commonpoint is seeking a Literacy Coordinator to lead the Adult Workforce team and deliver ESOL and literacy instruction across multiple sites in Queens, with reporting to the Education Manager. You will supervise part-time instructors, develop curricula, and ensure DYCD compliance.

You will manage student records, scheduling, and grant-related reporting while coordinating with Benefits for client referrals. The role requires strong collaboration and program leadership in a nonprofit setting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field is required.
  • TEFL or CELTA certification is required/preferred.
  • 2+ years of literacy and ESOL instruction experience.
  • 1+ years supervising instructional staff.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of part-time instructors in HSE, ESOL, and Digital Literacy, with weekly supervision and reports to the Senior Director of Vocational and Educational Trainings.
  • Recruit ESOL students, coordinate testing, document collection, and needs assessments.
  • Develop contextualized curriculums, e-learning, and hybrid/in-person instructional tools.
  • Teach and co-teach beginner to advanced ESOL and literacy classes.

ABOUT THE ROLE

To continue advancing the impact we have across the communities we serve, Commonpoint is hiring an Literacy Coordinator situated within the Adult Workforce Department. The Adult Workforce Department plays a vital role in delivery of quality employment and training services to support equity of opportunity, which leads to economic self-sufficiency and mobility for community members. The individual hired as Literacy Coordinator will provide team management, instruction, and operational support to the Adult Workforce Vocational Training and Educational Programs team.

The goal is to create programming that will support educational gains and cohort mobility culminating in ESOL, HSE, and other educational related programs and training. The Literacy Coordinator will possess vast experience working with Adult Literacy, practicing differentiated and blended learning, test prepping, and managing educational administrative projects involving student records, diploma and certification attainments and various grants awarded by the city, state, and federal government. This role reports directly to the Education Manager.

Across the agency, Literacy Coordinators are responsible for providing instruction and curriculum development to the Adult Workforce Vocational Training and Educational Programs team. Additionally, the position will also involve management and supervision of part-time instructors. The goal is to create programming that will support educational gains and cohort mobility culminating in timely ESOL, and other educational-related programs and trainings. The Literacy Coordinator will possess vast experience working with Adult literacy, practicing differentiated and blended learning, test prepping, and managing educational administrative projects involving student records, diploma and certification attainments and various grants awarded by the city, state, and federal government.

Schedule:

Monday through Friday, depending on student and instructor needs. Mondays and Fridays are 9:00am - 5:00pm and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are 12:00pm - 8:00pm.

This position may require future Saturday instruction, in which case, your hours will be adjusted accordingly.

This position is based in Elmhurst with occasional instruction in Forest Hills, Queens. Flexibility is required as occasional travel to other agency locations in Queens and The Bronx may be necessary based on programming needs.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Literacy responsibilities:
  • Manage a team of part-time instructors (HSE, ESOL, and Digital Literacy) and provide education and curriculum support, weekly supervisions, and set deliverables and report updates to the Senior Director of Vocational and Educational Trainings.
  • Assist in the recruitment of ESOL students by scheduling for Best Plus testing, document collection, and other needs assessments.
  • Develop contextualized curriculums, e-learning lessons, hybrid, and in-person instructional tools.
  • Teach and instruct classes for select beginner, intermediate and advanced-level classes at Commonpoint.
  • Ensure all classes are implemented in accordance with DYCD guidelines and requirements.
  • Responsible for cohort and training outcomes and mobility: ESOL literacy and language improvement, and consistent attendance, retention, and engagement across all trainings and educational programs.
  • Develop and manage supplemental academic assessments, programmatic reports, and student service plans to ensure student success.
  • Collaborate with support staff to meet participation and retention goals.
  • Refer students to internal and external HSE programs and Adult Basic Education programs. Work closely with Commonpoint’s Benefits team to refer clients to FairFare, SNAP, and other support services.
  • Manage and oversee class staffing in Career Readiness, ESOL, and HSE.
  • Assist in the recruitment and retention of educational programs.
  • Develop workshops, partnerships, and field trips to enhance academic learning and cooperation.
  • Represent the agency and participate in funding programmatic meetings, as well as attend staff and agency meetings and initiatives.
Impact & Data Management:
  • Manage and oversee data entry for Commonpoint’s internal Salesforce and the Department of Youth and Community Development’s (DYCD) Participant Tracking System (PTS) in accordance with case notes, attendance, scheduling, and intake guidelines.
  • Help develop and maintain monthly and quarterly ESOL and other education class schedules in alignment with DYCD-approved program requirements and timelines.
  • Help create supplemental academic assessments, programmatic reports, and student service plans to ensure student success.
  • Assist in developing contextualized curriculums, e-learning lessons, hybrid, and in person instructional tools.
Partnerships & Internal-External Relations:
  • Develop workshops, partnerships, and field trips to enhance academic learning and cooperation.
  • Represent the agency and participate in funding programmatic meetings, as well as attend staff and agency meetings and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with support staff to meet participation and retention goals.
  • Attend weekly Adult Workforce team meetings, DYCD provider calls, and other meetings as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS & KEY ATTRIBUTES:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field required, or equivalent of work experience in the ESOL and education field.
  • TEFL or CELTA certification.
  • 2+ years successful experience providing literacy and ESOL instruction.
  • 1+ years of experience supervising instructional staff.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Highly experienced with city, state, and local grants, such as DYCD, HRSA, and other funding sources.
  • Demonstrate cultural competency through familiarity in working with people from a very diverse number of backgrounds. Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, or other language is a plus.
