Job summary

An educational advocacy organization seeks a candidate to oversee literacy and educational programs for children in the Bronx/Brooklyn area. The ideal candidate will provide direction and advocacy, develop enriching literacy environments, and support families through remote activities. A strong background in early childhood education and advocacy, along with a master's degree in a related field, is preferred. This role is vital in enhancing educational outcomes for children.

Overview

Job Summary: Oversee and address literacy and educational needs of children in LEAP Community. Provide educational direction and advocacy for children, their parents and foster parents. Engage parents, foster parents and staff in literacy programs, activities and trainings. Integrate the literacy skills of reading and writing into every aspect of student learning.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the development and management of theEarlyChildhoodLiteracyCenter in the Bronx/ Brooklyn office
  • Createliteracy-rich environments throughout the agency with a particular focus on waiting areas and visiting rooms
  • Support Families and Children with remote/ Virtual early literacy activities (working zoom or YouTube channel)
  • Provide assistants withEarlyIntervention, CPSE and CSE referral and services
  • Coordinate tutoring services for children in the primary grades
  • Develop and implement innovative literacy program enhancements with all staff
  • Develop linkages with community resources, educational organizations and schools
  • Facilitate literacy trainings for foster parents, parents and staff
  • Offer reading activities for children, including story hours and summer reading programs
  • Attend team meetings, youth’s FTCs, community meetings as needed
  • Obtain and review school records including special education records tutoring program
  • Conduct school visits when need to discuss child’s progress in school
  • Review IEPs with case planner and ensure IEPs services are being provided.
  • Coordinate with The Legal Aid Society and Advocates for Children when a case requires more in-depth educational advocacy
  • Enter all notes in applicable systems
  • Work with ACS to ensure adequate bussing for all applicable children
Knowledge, Education and Skills Required
  • Early Childhood education and development
  • Broad knowledge of and connections with the New York City Department of Education. Track record of strong advocacy skills on behalf of children.
