Job summary

HDR is seeking a Liquid Fuels Infrastructure Technical Lead to oversee the design and execution of complex liquid fuels systems for federal and commercial clients. You will mentor engineers, coordinate multi‑discipline teams, and ensure quality and schedule adherence while growing HDR’s liquids portfolio.

The role requires a PE license, 10+ years in mechanical design, and strong proficiency with AutoCAD, MS Project and MS Office.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • Minimum of 10 years in mechanical system design for commercial or institutional facilities.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license recognized by the licensing board for the position location (e.g., PE or P.Eng).
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, MS Project and AutoCAD.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, grow and participate in HDR’s Federal and commercial Liquid Fuels portfolio execution.
  • Manage key projects or programs, including leading technical staff and sub-consultant teams.
  • Provide analysis, evaluation and design of fuel systems for military and commercial clients.
  • Support client development and marketing with business, operations, marketing and project staff.
  • Build capabilities through recruitment and staff training with local, regional and national teams.
  • Oversee quality control reviews per HDR policy.
  • Support Project Managers with planning and managing all aspects of Liquid Fuels projects.
  • Coordinate work of engineers and balance resources across a project.
  • Track financials and adjust work effort to stay on schedule.

HDR is looking for a Liquid Fuels Infrastructure Technical Lead that will be responsible for the execution of the technical aspects and deliverables of HDR’s federal and commercial liquid fuels infrastructure projects. This individual must be a professional engineer who understands and can complete all technical requirements of projects from basic to significant complexity. They will support the growth of the HDR Liquid Fuels Infrastructure Team, assign tasks to staff and provide technical mentorship to the team. They will be responsible for the coordination and assignment of quality control reviews for work performed by senior level engineers and/or designers. They will also work with client managers and the national business class to identify and develop specific technical expertise and will attend training and seminars focused on further development and understanding of complex concepts related to their discipline.

This position requires a self‑motivated candidate who can work independently and directly, mentor, train, and/or supervise the efforts of the team. They will establish strong internal client relationships throughout HDR as well as with external liquid fuels clients, both federal and commercial. They must have an in‑depth understanding of internal and external clients’ business objectives to determine effective execution strategies. They will also build local teams and/or leverage existing staff across the company to execute work and deliver world‑class services to those clients.

The Liquid Fuels Infrastructure Technical Lead will also lead in the design of liquid petroleum fuel systems. Types of fuel systems include above‑ground operational and bulk storage systems, hydrant fuel distribution systems, marine transload and distribution systems, vehicle on and off loading systems, and supporting pipeline, pump and mechanical systems. The duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Be responsible for monitoring, growing and participating in the execution of HDR’s Federal and commercial portfolio of Liquid Fuels Infrastructure services throughout HDR.
  • Manage key projects or programs, including managing technical staff and sub‑consultant teams to meet project delivery needs and exceed client expectations.
  • Provide analysis, evaluation and design of fuel systems for both military and commercial clients.
  • Participate in Liquid Fuels Infrastructure marketing efforts, communications and client development with business, operations, marketing and project staff to maximize client satisfaction, company growth and profitability.
  • Work with local and regional operations and national leadership to build capabilities through recruitment and staff training.
  • Be responsible for quality control reviews in accordance with HDR’s policy.
  • Support HDR Project Managers with planning and managing all aspects of Liquid Fuels Infrastructure projects.
  • Independently coordinate the work of engineers and balance resource planning throughout an entire project's development.
  • Coordinate workload throughout an entire project's development and ensure completion of documents on schedule.
  • Track financial aspects of projects, and coordinate/adjust work effort with teams to ensure that work is completed within parameters of agreed‑to schedule.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Actively engaged in professional or industry associations to enhance HDR technical expertise and brand.
  • Master's degree in architectural engineering with Mechanical emphasis.
  • Healthcare, Science and Technology and/or Civic facilities experience.

  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, MS Project and AutoCAD.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, previous team coordination and project management experience.
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm.
