Job summary

Altech Solutions is hiring a Linux Systems Administrator to support NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. This role sits inside engineering and lab environments where researchers rely on robust compute ecosystems.

You will build and deploy open-source scientific software, administer Linux and Windows servers, manage backups, and ensure security patching while collaborating with engineers and scientists.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with 4 years of relevant experience.
• Advanced system administration experience across Linux, Mac, and Windows.
• Hands-on experience compiling and troubleshooting open-source software from source.
• Scripting and command-line experience — Bash, Python, Perl, or similar.
• Understanding of storage systems including SAN, NAS, RAID, NFS, and LUNs.
• Understanding of basic networking concepts and IT security best practices.
• US Citizenship with ability to obtain NASA Public Trust clearance.
• Residence within 50 miles of Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA

Responsibilities

• Build and deploy open-source and scientific applications from source, resolving dependencies and documenting builds.
• Administer Linux and Windows servers: installation, configuration, patching, tuning, and maintenance.
• Support end users on Linux, Mac, and Windows workstations in an engineering/research setting.
• Configure and support Apache web servers, including virtual hosts and TLS.
• Debug application and system-level problems with logs, strace, gdb, and performance tools.
• Write and maintain scripts to automate repetitive tasks.
• Maintain system backups and ensure data recoverability.
• Assist with monitoring and management of storage systems (SAN/NAS).
• Manage virtualized infrastructure — VMware ESXi and vCenter.
• Apply configuration management practices for consistency and auditable environments.
• Resolve security issues including patching and risk analysis.
