Job summary

The University of California, Berkeley's Berkeley Seismology Lab (BSL) seeks a Systems Administrator to provide frontline IT support and maintain Linux servers, storage, backups, and networking for the BSL and EPS. This full-time role splits time between two departments and reports within each unit.

You will manage user accounts, space allocations, and security, while collaborating with staff, faculty, researchers, and students on a wide range of IT challenges.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalent experience or training.
• Ability to communicate technical information clearly to staff, faculty, students, researchers, and admins.
• Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and in a team.
• Ability to recommend and apply technologies, systems, and services to meet user requests.
• Experience with Linux system operations, configuration, and management.
• Experience writing/moderating scripts for system maintenance and administration.
• Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions to improve performance.
• Knowledge of computer security best practices and policies.

Responsibilities

• Provides frontline tech support and consulting across multiple departments and user groups.
• Maintains Linux servers, storage subsystems, inventories hardware, and coordinates with vendor support.
• Administers IT systems including users, space allocations, mailing lists, and backups.
• Monitors resource use and recommends expansions as needed.
• Recommends and purchases hardware and keeps an inventory of supplies.
• Acts as local network and security contact; responds to security incidents and educates users.
