Job description

Overview:

Optomi, in partnership with a leading telecommunications client, is seeking a Linux Systems Administrator / Engineer to support and maintain a critical, fully virtualized RHEL/Linux infrastructure environment hosted in Microsoft Azure. This is a hands‑on role focused on Linux administration, system troubleshooting, patching, upgrades, storage management, and ongoing infrastructure maintenance across production and engineering environments.

The ideal candidate is a true Linux Administrator/Engineer with strong foundational Linux skills, Bash scripting experience, and the ability to troubleshoot issues directly at the operating system level. The environment includes Docker, Kubernetes, and other infrastructure technologies, providing an opportunity to expand technical expertise. This role is part of a small, collaborative engineering team where ownership, curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn and grow are highly valued.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer, maintain, and troubleshoot RHEL/Red Hat Enterprise Linux virtual machines across production and engineering environments.
  • Perform operating system patching, upgrades, package management, and routine system maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot Linux system performance, processes, services, networking, storage, and resource utilization.
  • Manage Linux services using systemd and troubleshoot service failures and system‑level issues.
  • Administer Linux storage environments using LVM, XFS, logical volumes, filesystems, and virtual disks.
  • Expand and manage storage capacity while understanding the relationship between virtual disks, logical volumes, and filesystems.
  • Configure and troubleshoot Linux networking, DNS, connectivity, and system communications.
  • Administer Linux authentication and access using LDAP, NSS, PAM, and SSSD.
  • Manage SSH configuration and security hardening, SSL/TLS certificates, and vulnerability remediation.
  • Support and troubleshoot Sendmail/SMTP services.
  • Monitor Linux infrastructure using Nagios or comparable monitoring platforms and proactively respond to system issues.
  • Support Linux infrastructure within Microsoft Azure and troubleshoot connectivity with Azure services and Active Directory.
  • Support Docker and Kubernetes environments running on Linux.
  • Develop and maintain Bash scripts to automate system administration and operational tasks.
  • Support infrastructure tooling including Jenkins, GitLab, Jira, Confluence, and related DevOps platforms.
  • Investigate complex production issues and identify root causes across infrastructure components.
  • Collaborate with engineering and technical teams to resolve infrastructure issues and improve system reliability.
  • Document system configurations, troubleshooting procedures, operational processes, and maintenance activities.
  • Research and implement new technologies, tools, and processes that improve infrastructure operations.
  • Participate in planned maintenance and occasional after‑hours support, approximately 1–2 occurrences per month.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong hands‑on experience administering Linux systems, particularly RHEL/Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
  • Strong understanding of Linux operating system architecture, administration, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with yum and/or dnf, operating system upgrades, patching, and package management.
  • Strong knowledge of LVM, XFS, filesystems, logical volumes, and storage management.
  • Experience with systemd, processes, services, and system resource troubleshooting.
  • Strong Linux networking and troubleshooting skills.
  • Bash scripting experience is required.
  • Experience with LDAP, NSS, PAM, and/or SSSD.
  • Experience with SSH administration and security hardening.
  • Experience with SSL/TLS certificate management.
  • Experience supporting SMTP/Sendmail.
  • Experience with Nagios or comparable infrastructure monitoring tools.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with the ability to identify root cause rather than simply elevate issues.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting Microsoft Azure environments.
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with Jenkins, GitLab, Gerrit, and Nexus.
  • Experience supporting Jira and Confluence.
  • DNS administration and troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience with Perl and/or Python scripting.
  • Exposure to PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, or other database environments.
