Job summary

Family Service of Rhode Island is seeking a Line Cook for our 24/7 residential and school setting in Exeter, RI. You will prepare a variety of meals, adhere to nutrition standards, and support a safe kitchen environment for youth and staff.

Previous industrial kitchen experience, food safety certification, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are required. The role involves menu adherence, large-volume recipe adjustments, and ongoing collaboration with kitchen staff

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of safety and hygiene standards, regulations and practices.
  • At least 1 year of culinary work experience in an industrial kitchen.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; Food handling certificate.

Responsibilities

As a Line Cook in our 24/7 residential and school setting, you’ll do more than prepare meals—you’ll help create moments of comfort, stability, and joy for the youth in our care. Your work will directly support their health, learning, and emotional well-being. From early-morning breakfasts before class to warm dinners after a long day, you’ll be part of the daily rhythm that makes our program feel like home.

Specific Duties / Responsibilities
  • Prepare a wide variety of hot and cold dishes, snacks, and special dietary items according to approved menus that meet nutritional standards and regulatory requirements
  • Adjust recipes for large-volume production, portion control, and cost efficiency
  • Assist in menu development or suggest variations when needed
  • Monitor and record food temperatures to ensure safety
  • Maintain strict adherence to state and local health department sanitation requirements
  • Practice safe food handling, including proper storage, refrigeration, and cross-contamination prevention
  • Set up and stock stations with ingredients, equipment, and utensils before service
  • Operate and maintain food service equipment (ovens, fryers, grills, salad bars)
  • Perform routine cleaning and inspection of kitchen areas and appliances; rotate and store food supplies properly
  • Monitor inventory levels and report shortages to supervisors
  • Requisition supplies and equipment based on usage estimates
  • Apportion and serve meals to students, and/or staff in a timely, consistent manner
  • Train and evaluate assigned kitchen staff or residents on food service duties
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming serving environment.
  • Collaborate with other kitchen staff to ensure smooth workflow and order delivery
  • Communicate order status, kitchen needs, and safety concerns to team members
  • Support team morale and maintain professional boundaries when working with students
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of: Safety and hygiene standards regulations, Industrial kitchen tools and equipment & cooking methods techniques, Nutrition and special dietary requirements, Volume preparation, portion control, and food preservation, Inventory Control System
  • Previous experience in industrial kitchens required
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Food Handling and preparation certificate
  • At least 1 year of culinary work experience
  • Spanish Speaking preferred and is compensated
  • Excellent multitasking and communication skills a must
  • Ability to work independently and part of a team
  • Bilingual/ASL skills are compensated by an additional 6%, above base pay.
  • Multilingual skills are compensated by an additional 8%, above base pay.
Physical Requirements
  • Current driver’s license, reliable transportation, registration and auto insurance
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Travel to and from community locations and office site, which could include using walkways, stairs and/or elevators
  • Ability to lift up to 20lbs
  • Ability to be trained in and implement de-escalation techniques utilizing Handle with Care when necessary
